DROID 2.1 Update thread.

2.1 Speech-to-text feature. Takes too long!

One of the things I was looking forward to with the 2.1 updated is the speech-to-text feature in all text fields. I was impressed how well the Google voice search works, so I thought it would be good for texting and even writing emails.

It does a wonderful job of recognizing speech - even with my wife's southern accent, it gets it right. But how disappointing that it takes so long to analyze the speech! I could have typed what I wanted to say in that time!

If you overclock your Droid, will this speed this function up, or is it being analyzed by Google outside your phone?

It takes 5 - 10 seconds, sure ... but I've used it often! Some one sends me a text while I'm driving -- it's amazing!!!

Well, this morning I got the notice to update. After I ran the update I was stuck on the flashing red eye boot screen. After about an hour of staring at this screen I figured I was not rebooting. I removed the battery and backed up the SD card and then put the battery back in. Now I have nothing. Phone will not start at all. I can't even do a factory reset... it has no life.

I wish I had never touched this upgrade... at least I used to have a phone.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to start this piece of &$*%

I agree with UserError. It's mostly useful to me when driving. In the car mount, I can text people with one press of a button, and dictate without taking my hands off the wheel.

Although it apparently doesn't like my uber-fast new england talk, because it rarely gets short sentences right.

hi guys, I'm sorry if this issue has been addressed earlier but my problem is that i had gotten the OTA update and when it was all done and I slid the unlock button it has a force close window that wont stop popping up that says, "the application launcher(process com.adroid.launcher2) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.". So i was wondering if this has anything to do with the fact that i was running some software i downloaded off one of these forums that give my droid the nexus one software. The one with the 3d app menu launcher and 2.1 gallery and music versions as well as the 5 home screens. So if anyone can help i would really appreciate that.

It sucks, but your phone's far from dead. You can reflash the .sbf file. Do a search for 2.0.1 SBF file on google and it should result in the SBF file, as well as the program (which I cannot remember what it is right now.) I know a lot of this info is out there on alldroid.org. But your phone can still be recovered.

This doesn't do you much good while in the car, but the speech to text on my Nexus One is almost instant when on a wifi connection.

It is not meant to be blazing fast. When I'm driving, this thing is a God-send! If I speak slowly, like a robot, it works amazingly well haha. And I don't mind because it is keeping me safe and is STILL faster than texting while driving.

or just take it to Verizon and tell them what happened??

As long as you weren't in some way shape or form rooted, then that might not be too bad an idea. But updating the SBF, from my understanding, is exactly what they are going to do.

So GenericMessage, after reading your post, I sat down and really thought about things. After a soft reset I have now found that my battery is back to normal. I don't know if it was all in my head, but things have settled down. I am even using the live wall papers. Thanks.:)

I forgot to mention that now with the new weather widget, I stopped using my WeatherBug Elite widget. Opps! Sorry WeatherBug, I won't uninstall you, just might not use you as often.

Wow, I did not know that. I admit, when I received my update OTA this morning and was testing out the Live Wallpapers I assumed the same thing... that running them would kill the battery. I did some people saying they would only use it to show off to other people and then put it back to a regular wallpaper to save battery.

Thanks, it's good to know it won't drain battery that much, but I will do my own experiment and see how much different the battery acts, if at all. No offense.

Phenomenal! I just want everyone to enjoy the sweet awesome'ness of the Droid to its fullest potential!

Its far more than a beast of a machine, its also quite beautiful. I can stare at it for hours...............................................*drools* Now....what was I doing again?

The update came through Friday morning.

Having an issue with the photo gallery not pulling in new camera pics in a timely manner. I like the look of new gallery.

No problems with the system being buggy.

Same issue with the Gallery from time to time. I'm finding backing out of the Gallery and going back in tends to alleviate the issue.

Any word on just how long some of us are supposed to wait for this update?

And no, I don't want to do the manual one. I've read more problems in this thread with the manual update than with the OTA one.

They did the math for an article on the main page, figured it could take up to 20 days from the first batch..you may need alot of patience :)
