DROID 2.1 Update thread.

I updated my google maps application, and i'm still not getting the "night" mode when driving with navigation (where it turns the background black so you aren't blinded). I can't find any option anywhere in any menu's to enable the night-time driving mode. How the hell do I get it to work?

Lol, I understand your frustration. Sadly there is no button that turns it on, its TIME based.

So when its dark outside (a time when it "SHOULD" be) it'll switch to night mode.

Annoying, I know.

That's the thing though. Even when it's dark outside, my google maps is not switching to night mode.

When you plug it in when its off, it turns on.

That was my statement.

A little couth goes a long way

You:
"1.) you don't get that option, if its plugged in, its on."

Which is incorrect. If you turn it off AFTER its plugged in it stays off.

His question was how do you keep it off when its plugged in which ALSO applies here because if you plug it in then turn it off it stays off.

Please make sure you remember what you typed before you reply to me. Thanks.

Yeah. Although even if I weren't, it should still give you that option.

Well if you aren't "en-route" (as in currently receiving directions), it won't. Maps just itself wont change to a night mode, just the directions portion.

I know this sounds silly but have you checked to make sure your system time is accurate?

I was rooted, running custom roms (I've done droidmod, koush, bugless beauty, smoked glass, etc.) overclocked. A zillion apps and all sorts of hacks.

Well... It was getting all buggy and laggy and basically frustrated.

I unrooted and went back to 2.01. I'm currently charging my battery and when that's done I'll do a factory wipe. I'm assuming that I'll get 2.1 OTA at that time. If not I'll do 2.1 manually. I don't know what was causing my issues and want to wipe everything. I want to clear a bunch of junk off of my SD card (all sorts of roms and assorted files). Here's my question...

If I delete EVERYTHING off of the card (I mean EVERYTHING) after I do my factory reset, will that cause any problems?

My pictures and ringtones are on the PC. So, I can re-install them rather easily. My paid apps are stored in market under my user name, contacts are in gmail. I'm willing to re-download any free apps and reconfigure them - this time around I'll NOT download every app that catches my eye and just do a few.

I have a Titanium backup, a nandroid backup, and an Astro backup.. am I missing anything? I'm gonna wipe after I charge up and don't want to brick this thing.

Won't harm it wiping the SD card.

If i popped it out and popped a brand new one in; it'd have nothing on it. Therefore, you'll be safe

Thanks. Upon you advice I wiped the SD card too, you're right, it reinstalls any system files automatically and loses no core data. It's very nice to have a clean slate and not have all of the crap I had on there. I had all of this music on the card. But, I used Pandora and never actually played any of my songs - wasted space.

I did the factory wipe. It got the 2.1 OTA and for some reason (perhaps since I have appbrain) all of my apps were waiting for re-download in Market.

I thought that all free apps were lost when you wiped - this was surprising and awesome.

Wipe did wonders - I had laggy and buggy problems and could not track it down to a specific app, hack, or rom. Now, I can start off clean and slowly build it again. Right now (stock 2.1) this is the fastest and smoothest I have been in weeks.

I installed 29 apps and I'm at 80% (209Mb) free phone memory and 98% free on SD card - this sucker is humming. It's like brand new. I never fell out of love with my Droid. But, we were arguing and needed some counseling. Now, we're on our second honeymoon.

2.1 review...

pros:
-- yahoo mail support
-- a cleaner pinch to zoom in browser than any rom I was running
-- more stable live wallpapers (roms would sometimes just stop working the live papers)
-- very fast and responsive
-- faster response on wake up (I use "mylock" to bypass the lock screen and it's on home in under a second. Compare that to rooted, and hacked 2.1 - it took about 2 seconds. I know that's a small difference in ACTUAL time. But, it demonstrates snappiness)

cons:
-- only 3 screens (fixable with home replacements, I'm just not a fan of them)
-- no overclocking (but, I think this was a placebo effect anyhow)

I don't know about battery performance as I've only been running it for a few hours now. But, i just did about 2 days worth of stuff and i'm at 70%

I almost pooped myself when I read that YOU are STOCK! lol

Oh! And the apps being in the market? Thats tied to your account! So if you got a different android device they'd all be there, thats just how it works! Cool eh?

Glad you and the girl could work it out! 'cause her sister (my droid) is pretty fantastic.

Look into Pandahome2 in the market. Has more-or-less stock drawer, and can add screens. Some other things I like too. And free. I like it slightly better than Helix, but I think it is mostly a preference. Certainly can't hurt to try!!

Well.... I've been stock 2.1 for about 72 hours. Yawn... Boring! I think I'll revert to 2.01, root, flash, overclock, and hack. What's the fun of having an Android device if you can't play with it?

As to battery life, watch the new Google News/Weather app, it likes to start running in the background sometimes without warning or being asked....and suddenly your red light is blinking!

There you go, getting my hopes up only to destroy them
