DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

Yes, it only works on root, which given the news today shouldn't be an issue hopefully. Beyond that, FOXFI was updated with JB support so people can relax now. :)

So for those of us who have not rooted our phones, should we hurry and get it done before JB or will there be a way to root once the upgrade happens? Just want to get an idea of how long I have to get my phone rooted.

I'm of the opinion that we do NOT have a working root exploit for Bionic JB. :( So if you want root, now is the time. We can protect it through the update, but, if you ever have to flash system for any reason (i.e. FXZ) you will permanently lose root with no wait to get it back. With Dan retiring we are essentially screwed. And I've been told he said he won't be magically pulling a Bionic exploit out of the air for us. Sucks to be us I guess but then that's par for the course. :)

This thread is hysterical. Its like a mini forum within a forum.

My bad habits from another forum and not staying focused. But, you can't say it's not interesting. :D

I like to think of it as a conversation. We're all talking with each other, and if something reminds us of something else then we bring that up.

Exactly. Kind of makes me a little misty eyed that our days are numbered on the Bionic forum...

Well then I suppose my time has come to root.

Fortunately I was able to interpret these feelings correctly: loss of essence.

Yeah, maybe we should have a Bionic "alumni" group!

Unlikely. I say impossible but people have argued with me so we'll see. Once the QFuse is blown, there's no "unblowing it"...it essentially becomes a dev device.

They could easily include a command to re-lock the bootloader on first boot after an update is applied since the device supports that function. I'm sure they'll also be patching the memory write vulnerability in the TrustZone kernel.

And then get sued when it does that on dev phones?

Maybe the Bionic will be worth something as a "collectible" some day...pass it on to my grandkids! :o (kick myself for not keeping all those (Mantle, Mays,...) baseball cards I had as a kid that are now worth a fortune... :( )

That assumes there's no way to identify them.

No, that assumes there's no way for an UPDATE to identify them. Moto has the MEID's of all the dev phones, but, that does little good for an update that's programmed to relock unlocked phones.

Well, we'll find out soon. They're working on an update to plug the hole. We'll see if they relock the phones with that update when it comes.
