DROID BIONIC Jelly Bean Update

Sam,

Is it possible that the root method Dan just released for the RAZR HD running 4.1.2 will work once we get updated to JB, or is that only for non-OMAP phones? I realize the bootloader unlock will not work, but wasn't sure if that was also true with root..

Thank you.

No it will not.

Check my signature. *READ EVERYTHING* before doing please. I get very grouchy when I have to answer questions that I took the time to answer in the HoB OP and/or FAQ. The general idea is very simple in your case...I personally for posterity's sake would do an FXZ Keep Data to clean things up and return your system partition to full stock. (Won't touch your apps....don't panic. :) Your data partition will remain). Once that's done there's an option in the utility menu to root. Make sure to get the latest Moto drivers installed and follow all directions. If you run into problems, read to see if it's answered, and hit me up either here, the HoB discussion thread, or in a PM and I'll fix you up. If you JUST want to root and nothing more, use razr's edge (search for it or PM me and I'll send you my private link to it).

Not via OTA. The update is designed to update ONE specific version which is 246. 247 doesn't exist.

Just read your HoB thread for the first time, because I might be considering it now. Had to laugh when every other paragraph said, "You've been warned" or some other way of saying the same thing.

Should i fxz down to 246 or wait for a future fxz release to jelly bean?

If you only knew the history and what I've been through...

That depends...how attached are you to having root?

That only partially answers my question. :) If you EVER want root again was the question. If you FXZ with JB, I can't guarantee you'll ever be able to get it back. If you take the OTA without being rooted and protecting root, I can't guarantee you'll ever get it back, either. People are so used to just being able to root when they want on Bionic but Dan R quit and we don't know yet if any of the existing exploits will work. If they don't, we won't have root. You could say "big deal, SOMEONE ALWAYS finds a root exploit"....yea, that's nice and bold, but, not true. Anyway, so before you take JB at all, either FXZ or OTA, you have to decide if you ever want root back. And if you do, root now, protect it with Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, and then take the OTA. And NEVER FXZ or you'll permanently lose it.

Well I just bit the bullet and rooted to change the build properties to break the update. I'll decide later if I want to bother keeping root and all like you said before I revert back and take the update. My main concern is that the final JB build pushed (down our throats?) is not going to be screwed up like happened on my Razr's OTA updates... twice. DX

This. Moto had NO intention of pushing 22 out the door. However, some whacked stuff went on with this so we will see it without ISIS and it may be better than I thought. Can't explain but we need to let the testers (my HoB volunteers) work over this build with their spare Bionics and see what can and can't be done with it and how good it really is. Patience will be a virtue.

So will this thread be a good place to keep up with info regarding our update? I'm curious to see if any exploit works, and to be informed about new developments, etc.

That's what concerns me, as well. And why I have testers willing to use their spare bionics to tell us what's what when this thing comes out.

I've kept everyone in this thread as up to date as I can and will continue to do so.

Sam,

Can you kindly remind me what "ISIS" is, and why it is detrimental?

Since I am eligible for an upgrade May 15th, I'm more inclined to take the leap with the OTA.

You know what Google wallet is? Yea, this is nothing like that. It's VZW's attempt at it.

So, how long do you think before we get KLP on our Bionics?

*ducks*

After JB arrives, I am just going to stop worrying about it. I'll be getting a new phone in 8-12 months and will worry about what's on that phone then. It will be refreshing to just accept what I have for awhile, frankly.

Sam, you have any insight as what to expect from I/O

Fortunately I was able to interpret these feelings correctly: loss of essence.

I know what *I* expect. LOL. But no, I have no idea what's coming. I'm hoping we see some new tablets, get some KLP loving, and see the supposed X phone. Honestly I hope it's not a spec fest. Cause that'd just suck.

Nope. I know this is the end of the line...and I'm actually happy to find something else to worry about. KLP will be on my next phone...or the one after that ;)

I'd love a new phone. My philosophy though is to buy on a major version of Android. So in theory, I'd want one with KLP so I'm looking at November. UGH. Not sure if I wanna wait that long or not. Maybe. We'll see.

As I've mentioned in the past, mine is a company phone. Got it in March 2012, so should get the new one in March 2014. I'm sure I'll have phone lust when KLP launches, but past experience tells me it won't roll out to non-Nexus phones much before your Nov timeframe. March isn't that long after, so hopefully I'll hit the timing right as well.
