Droid RAZR not opening apps

My sister and I each have a Droid RAZR Android version 4.1.2, we are both having problems with our phones opening anything. We are having a difficult time opening the phone to make or answer a call. They will often say activity.phone not responding. When trying to open various applications the app will begin to open (for example if opening facebook will show my feed but not allow to update feed), flash black, and return to the home screen.
I use Everything Home and Go SMS Pro however, I was using both of these before the problems started, and my sister uses the stock apps for everything.
I started my phone in safe mode to try and find the problem, but the phone quickly froze and then restarted.

Any suggestions on what to do, or anyone else having these issues?

Try clearing the system cache partition, which can get a little cluttered with system log files and other temporary data. This will not erase any important data.

If that doesn't help, it might be time for a factory data reset, which will erase all local data, so backup everything first. You'll also have to reinstall all of your apps.

I really hate this phone. Some days it takes me 5-10 minutes to make a call or send a text. It's frustrating!!! It has a mind of its own and apps are constantly coming up "Not responding".

I can't wait until my contract is up in April. Hate. this. phone.

I liked my Droid Razr because it wasn't bulky and didn't feel like a brick in my pocket, but I'm seeing performance issues over the last few months, too. For example, if I want to get navigation going, It can take several minutes from when I wake it up to when I've finally got the address in google maps and it finally starts navigation. In the meantime, I keep getting "App is not responding" messages and long, long lag when I press buttons. Once it gets going, it's not quite so bad, but it's still very slow at times. I also have a problem where when I get a call, I can hear the phone ringing or vibrating, but the screen doesn't wake up fast enough for me to accept the call. That's a joke.

I've deleted a lot of apps, particularly things that run constantly, and cleared the system cache. Is it worth doing a factory reset or trying something else, or do these phones just slow down as new apps and OS updates with more demanding processing requirements come out? I guess I don't have much to lose by doing a factory reset, if I can back everything up first. I'd rather keep a phone for a while rather than getting a new one constantly, but this one is becoming useless, and it's less than 2 years old.

I'm on Verizon and using Android 4.1.2.
