DroidX Guide to Rooting, Backing Up and Installing Custom ROMs

Ive been sitting here for 10 minutes after clicking Perm Root, and it seems that z4 is frozen (still on the blue screen). The loading circle is stuck and not spinning. Any idea why? Or what I should do?

Same thing happened to me.a thread about titanium backup I think suggested I pull the battery and retry.worked for me...try to find thread tho I'm still kinda new here

Give it a few minutes... it takes some time. If not pull the battery and install it again. Make sure its on the root of the SD card.

Here's my question:

If I root with Z4 and do a permanent root, then backup with Titanium, then do a factory reset, will I remain rooted so I can just go to the market and pick up Titanium again and restore? Thanks again for all your help, CW.

Yes you should remain rooted until you hit the unroot button in Z4. If you do lose root just open Z4 and hit the rereoot button.

Sweet, thanks. So Z4 should stay on the phone even after a factory reset, or will I have to download again?

It should still be there if I remember correctly. You will still have super user access so even if you have to relaunch z4 just to get the icon back you will still be rooted. The only way to get rid of it is to unroot and then do a factory reset.

This is my first posting, after looking around other sites I find the necessary tools to begin my sojourn into rooting particularly on this site, looking to enjoying myself and participating.

Once you get a basic understanding of the info its very simple. If you have any questions feel free to ask. Don't rush into anything. Don't forget to make a backup of your stock system before changing anything.

CW, thanks for all the help. I'm now rooted with Z4 and did my Titanium backup of everything. That's really all I wanted to do with rooting, just in case I ever need to do a full restart. Thanks again, man. Definitely helped me out a ton.

Now I'm sure I'll have to download Wireless Tether and possibly look into some custom ROMs, but I don't want to get TOO ahead of myself. ;)

I had the same problem mine looked like it was hung up, I hit the home button and it went to my home screen. After a reboot it worked great.
On my wifes X I installed Z4 powered off and on and Permanent root worked first try about 20 seconds.

Thanks CW for the wireless tether information I got it up and working just fine. Does anyone know if there is a way to use WIFI to make a Google voice call and have the network in airplane mode so you don't use network minutes?

I really want to root my phone and im doing the research. I can't seem to find out when I backup everything with titanium backup? Since the app says "requires root" do I z4 root then back up before flashing a rom? Sorry if this is a dumb question. All I really want is root so I can have free wireless hotspot on my DX.

Okay, so you just need Z4root and Titanium then. Actually you just need Z4 but its always good to have a backup. Download Z4 and install/run it. It will give you super user access and you will see a super user icon in your app drawer... it looks like an android pirate. Then go into the market and download Titanium Backup Pro. In titanium, go to Menu>Batch .... and you will see a bunch of backup and restore options. Choose Backup System Data and Apps. You now have a full backup of your phone saved to your SD card. If you want to delete or freeze apps/bloat.... you're good to go.
Since you're not dealing with custom Roms... you're done. If Wireless Tether wasn't automatically added to the phone then just go into the market and download it.

If you ever want to get into custom Roms let me know and I'll guide you through it. You would then need Rom Manager or Droid Bootstrapper.

Thanks! I appreciate the help. Yea I don't know if ill be getting into any custom roms because im pretty happy with launcher pro plus. One thing I am interested in is overclocking my cpu. What's the best app for this and what is the best cpu setting to use. I just want the safest most stable setting that wont kill my battery or fry my cpu just some extra speed. I don't quite know that all the ghz @ 7volts translates into. Thanks dude!

Jrummys..... Droid Overclocker. I use Low Frequency at 1.2ghz. I found that to be the most stable for me.... no problems. Every phone is different though even if its the same model. If I get a chance later I will list my profile settings for you.

Success! I am rooted, backed up, overclocked at 1.2ghz low voltage, free wireless tether I love it. Just one more question. Say if gingerbread ever makes it to the droid x what do I have to do to get the ota update. Just go into z4 unroot and wait for ota update then reroot or will z4 no longer work since its 2.3 then?

When 2.2 came out some people had success while others ran into problems. Worse case scenario.... if you freezed or deleted any Verizon system files/apps..(bloat).. you will need to unfreeze them/restore them back... to get the 2.3 update. As long as you have your stock backup of Froyo and Verizon's Apps and files you should be fine. Just flash back to the stock recovery and install the new update and then you can go back to rooting and your old setup.

If you didn't mess with anything and just have Z4 running then there's nothing to do. Just install the OTA.
