Dumb Sprint upgrade question

Hola,

So I've never done an upgrade on any service in my life (ETF'd on my G1 to get the EVO 4G) and I am kind of confused about how it works.

I got my EVO at launch with a new Sprint account will be eligible for an upgrade in April. From what I understand an upgrade means you only get a $150 credit towards a new device. How is that an incentive to remain with a service? If the phone is $550-700 without contract, wouldn't that mean the phone is now $400-550 WITH the upgrade? It would be cheaper to just walk away to another provider to get a new line price (porting your number). Can someone explain?

Thanks!

It goes as such.......after being on contract with them for 1 full year, your eligible for a upgrade credit of $75 and $150 after 2 years. When you go to upgrade your phone the price raises back to full retail then they take off the upgrade credit. Now you also have to remember about mail-in-rebates from the Sprint/manufacturer. For instance when I got my EVO on launch I had to spend $330 after my $150 upgrade credit. I then had to mail in the $100 rebate which I received in roughly about 6 weeks thus making the phone right around $230 after taxes and what not....hope that explains it. :)

the way it works is you basically get whatever the advertised price in store is for a new customer. I don't know why they say $150 instead of new customer price. When you upgrade at the "$150" level you get that price. when you upgrade at the "$75" level you get $75 off of retail off-contract price. When you go in they will tell you how much you will have to pay for what device. Also if you trade in your old evo they will give you $150 trade in credit as well.

It's also worth checking Radio Shack and Best Buy when upgrading I got my Evo 4g for 99.00 back in December along with a free Plantronics bluetooth, from Radio Shack. Radio Shack doesn't make you mail in your rebate either. They give your credit instantly in the store. Not sure if best buy does that.

Just make sure you know exactly what plan you want before going to R.S.. My experience they don't know crap, but they have great deals on the phones.

The only problem I've ever had with going through RS or BB is that if the device messes up, you have to take it back to them. I like being able to go to one place for all of my problems.

I got my OG Evo from BB, and I have taken it to a Sprint store a few times now. One time they even replaced my Evo because the Camera focus broke.

Have you tried taking it to Sprint?

You could always end your contract and then sign another one.

They changed it October 2nd because of that fruit phone. You only get $150, not the new customer price.

Look here to see how much your ETF is: Learn about Early Termination Fee

Although they changed the ETF fees, since you signed up before September, look in the right column to see how much you have to pay.

Also, buying a phone off-contract from RS or BB is usually more expensive than from Sprint. It's cheaper with a contract.

i know with RS after 30 days you take it to sprint for service and swap outs.

If your account shows $150 upgrade, that's new customer pricing. Only thing that changed is the $75 has gone away. Everyone gets new customer pricing every 20 months now.

$150 upgrade also includes any instant savings and rebates.

The new program sucks. Before the changes, when I logged in to My Sprint, if I wanted an EVO 4G, the price was $0.00; however, if I wanted an EVO 3D or Motorola Photon or the new Samsung Galaxy S-II, the price was $99.00--all very good prices for this current EVO 4G owner and 11-year customer.

Once October 2nd came and went, the above prices changed. The original EVO was now $99, while the others increased to $199.99.

The demise of the Premier program for me was a step back.
