Dumping the S5 for the Note 4 - Am I alone?

The original plan that many people are grandfathered into does not require that you pay off half the phone. The math is very good on that plan.

For example, my Nexus 5 was 17.50/month. After 6 months I walk in, turn it in, and walk out with an S5 with no money down for $27/month. 6 months later.....repeat. It's hassle free.

Exactly, I have the old plan, and it works perfect for me
I get insurance, a new phone every six months and the ability to pay month by month instead of $650 up front
So at $25 dollars a month for the GS5 (might be a little more but not by much), and $2 for the jump (I'd get the insurance anyway)
That equates to approximately $162 (not including tax and accessories)
That's a great deal
But the new jump program is messed up, though I do see why they changed it)

Maybe, just maybe, with insurance i could somehow justify the use of the jump plan. Even then it is a tough sell. I always use the Iphone as an example.

If i were to buy a new Iphone for $650 (not including tax) and use it for a year, i could sell it for around $450 if it is in good condition. So it would end up costing me around $250-270 when you factor taxes and a cheap case.

With the jump plan however, I need to pay at least half of the phone before i am allowed to upgrade. That means i have to pay the tax of $650 which comes to around $50 dollars (depending on where you live) plus half of the phone which is $325. On top of that you have to pay $10 a month for the jump plan. So, after a year you ended up paying $325 + 120 + 50 = $ 495 for ONE year use of an IPhone. If that is not a rip off i don't know what is. Even with insurance.

Plus here is the fine print on the insurance with the jump plan

"Deductible or processing fee will apply if traded-in device is lost/stolen, not in good working order, does not power on, or has liquid damage or broken screen; up to two Premium Handset Protection claims in a 12 month period."

So even if you were to break your phone you have to pay a deductible. Don't know how much it is.

I think it ranges from $25 to $175, but cmon, it's insurance
Of course there is a huge deductible, but I'd rather pay $150 dollars if my phone is stolen or broken than $650 for a new phone or to get it fixed (which I'm not sure how much it is, but I know it's expensive)

About to move from Note 3 to S5 I think. I love the Note but the size is starting to get to me. Plus I don't use half of the features like S pen or multi window. Plus I can get an S5 free on contract and sell the Note to fund a Tab S. Best of both worlds.

The S5 does multi window anyways so if you ever want to use it you can.

I feed my inner smartphone demon by buying used flagship devices and then selling them and getting the next flagship device used as well....on the side I fix phones and that keeps the cash flow going strong so haven't spent a penny out of pocket yet....but that could change

Totally agree, but it's their choice and their money. I am upgrading from a GS3.

Don't like the really big phones. I do like the S5, loved the One M8. But hated the camera. So I sold it to buy the S5. Hmmm sold the M8 for $340 and bought the S5 for $350. Might wind up selling the S5 later to the HTC One M9... Don't know, still time to think about it.

The jump program is included in the insurance on my plan, so really it is worth it to me. I might make the jump from the M8 to the Note 4. Just love the option to switch phones. The jump program is the same cost I was spending just for insurance on Verizon.

Hind sight being 20/20, I would have held out for the Note 4. I preferred just about everything with the Note 3 except that the S5 had a better camera, processor and battery life. Kind of wish I waited, but oh well. I'll be ready when the Note 5 comes out.

I am kind of expecting HTC to abandon the whole ultra pixel strategy. It clearly is not working. The HTC One camera is the weakest part of the phone.

I have a case on it and the back cover still creaks. That's why I'm annoyed by it more than anything. Maybe I need a new battery cover.

I'll look into it. The only website that I can guarantee has a genuine replacement is MobileFun but its near $30. I may have to bite the bullet but its a bummer to spend so much. Otherwise, I'm happy with this phone.

You're a smart consumer. Its actually far more profitable to sell a phone on eBay if you want a new one. Plus, once every 2 years you can sign a new contract if you wish and get a discount on the device.

I contacted Samsung and they're telling me they don't carry replacement back covers for warranty or to purchase. I'd have to buy from a third party vendor.

Uh... Samsung is starting to **** me off.
