On my Samsung Galaxy s9, during a phone call whenever I try to press the Call hold button it says Can't switch calls. I am not sure if this is an isolated issue with the handset or service provider issue. My service provider is Virgin mobile 8n UK. Thanks to anyone willing to help.

Kind regards.Screenshot_20191205-215027_Call.jpg

Hi, welcome to AC Forums!
Can clear data cache and force stop the dialer app see if it fixes it

Welcome to Android Central! Check with your carrier to make sure Call Waiting is included in your plan. Also, open your Phone app, tap Menu>Settings>Call Settings>Additional Settings and make sure Call Waiting is turned on there.

Hi guys

Thanks for your replies. I can confirm that call waiting is on. Also, I have cleared the cache and data but no joy. I guess I have to ask virgin mobile. Once I have a conclusive response from VM I will post another reply. Thanks again for the help.

Ok guys, sorry for not replying earlier but due to personal health reasons. Now, after a fairly recent update from Samsung, there is a slight progress on this issue. Now, when I try to answer another while already on a call, phone gives me options to either, end the first call or hold the first call. As soon as I select hold, nothing happens. By that I mean, I will still be on the first call. Now, any advise on this new development. I can confirm that after speaking to virgin numerous times for several hours it's not an issue on their end.

Thanks

You haven't responded to our suggestion, so don't know what to say unless you let us know if you tried those steps .

I have tried every suggestion given here and so far no joy. In my previous post I have mentioned that after having prolonged discussion with numerous tech gurus from Virgin, still no joy. I am really lost.

Thanks for all the help.

Have you cleared the cache partition and rebooted the phone? Are you using the stock dialer?

Sorry, hope you're feeling better!:) You mentioned before that you confirmed Call Waiting is turned on -- do you mean you only checked the Phone app's settings for that, or did you confirm with your carrier that Call Waiting is actually part of your plan and turned on from their end? Just want to make sure we've covered all the bases there.

What's the difference between "hold call" and "mute"?
My call screen has only mute.
I didn't have a third phone number handy to try call waiting.
I'm on Verizon in Great America.

I believe it's time to try the dreaded factory reset. Sometimes it's needed after an OS update and sometimes not. It is a good standard practice and much easier nowadays, with all of the backup / restore support available.

Tap the 3 dots on the top right and select Hold from the pictured screen.
Good luck

I was experiencing this issue on my Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G in the past couple weeks.
Problem was solved by removing the physical SIM card, cleaning the SIM card by wiping it off with my T-Shirt, then re-inserting SIM card, and powering on the phone.
I did this while on the phone with T-Mobile, so it possible that a refresh (the 2nd time) may have fixed it, but I really do think it might have been something as simple as oxidation/corrosion on the SIM card as it has been installed in the phone for over 2 years.
