I really want to see how well the Nook can play movies, yet through all of the websites I've been to and all the ripping programs I've downloaded, I can't get things to work right.

Can someone please help me with what they KNOW works? Including:
- Ripping Software
- Conversion Software (if needed)
- Ripping settings that work specifically for the NC
- App that plays files well.

Thanks, I greatly appreciate it.

(If the information is needed, I'm running CM7 RC4 with Dalingrin OC set to 1100Mhz)

As for ripping... cant help u but for playing i use seaman media player ( crappy name but good app). It is free. Once file ripped in avi format transfer to sd card and in player settings choose the appropriate folder thatcontains the file ( will remember so save all vids in same folder). Audio and video are off a fraction of a second but no bad. I have several cartoons saved two keep my two year old entertained in public.

To rip DVD to hard drive:

DVDFab HD Decrypter. Free to Decrypt DVD and Blu-ray, free to Copy DVD and Blu-ray.

Once there, you will need to convert it to a format readable by the Nook. Use this:

Best Free DVD Ripper. Best Free DVD Converter - Free Rip DVD to MP4, AVI, WMV, FLV, MPEG, MOV, MP3

There are several output options, you want to output in MP4:
1. Open the ripped DVD files using the 'DVD Path' button at the top of the screen.
2. Click on the 'to MP4' tab
3. Under 'Output settings', set 'Subtitle' to 'Disabled' (unless you want subtitles displayed when the movie is played).
4. Crank the volume slider to the right to get to +21db - makes the output louder with our small speaker.
5. Choose your video quality (I usually pick 1000-1500Kbps) and your output video size (I generally keep the original size)
6. Hit the 'Start' button

In theory, the second program above (WinX DVD Ripper) will also allow you to rip the DVD and convert it at the same time. However, I have had frequent problems getting the ripping part to work consistently, so use the DVDFab program above.

This works well for me. I have tried the 'Handbrake' program that others have recommended, and can't get it to work. There is even a 'preset' for Handbrake that is supposed to work for the Nook, but it didn't work for me.
Cheers.

I can't remember the name of the program I use to rip the DVD's, but I use Handbrake to convert the files. If I am using the SD card with Froyo on it, I use Rockplayer to watch the videos. If I am using the base nook software, I just use the built in video player.

When I was using Honeycomb, I could never get the audio and video to sync up.

I bought magic dvd ripper and copier years ago.
Only problem is with Disney/ Pixar Movies.

Other than that it's great.
Easy to use and well worth the money.

It's not free.

Tony is right. Instead of freeware I should have typed Free Trial. After the trial it is ~$35.

I am running the same setup as you are and I just used the two pieces of software from adcjunkman's post and the player from lafountain's post and it works like a charm. Just in time for my flight tomorrow, thank you!

So it can play AVIs? I thought the Nook could only do MP4s.

Using the Seaman Media player app, u can play avi's or divx, however u want to say it. One correction to earlier post, when u open the player, it lists all available folders on sd card. U must select the one containing the desired video. This must be done each time, it doesnt remember as i said it did earlier. Just click correct folder and it displays contents, click desired vid and it plays straight away.

For your question, I search"DVD to Nook Color" on Google, I used the first search results that provides DVD ripping software. all are OK, no any problem. U can also try it. Hopefully this DVD ripping software will help u.

Thanks for all the help. I won't have the time to try out any of these methods until the weekend, but I'll let y'all know by then.

The only converter that has worked consistently for me with the Nook Color is Handbrake. Use the "iPod Legacy" preset, and in the audio tab choose "stereo" for the mixdown option. The resulting file is an mp4 usually about 1GB in size that plays perfectly in the stock Nook player or any other.

I have great results using AnyDVD. BTW, replay from cards was poor, regardless of card speed. Replay from internal memory is just fine.

for dvdfab, also make sure to change the audio to "stereo". multi-channel audio will not work. you can also increase the audio volume--150% usually works well for me

freemake is a free software that has a preset for android that works for almost everything ive tried. there were a few dvd's it couldn't rip properly, but i think they updated it and it works now.

Ive just tried using Freemake and while it did rip and play the movie in my stock player or rockplayer, im having issues with language. The movie is being played in a language other than English, maybe spanish. Ive checked the language setting of my nook, and it is preset to english. Where do I go to change the language setting for the movies. Ive tried opening a menu button while in rockplayer or the standard movie player but was given no options to choose from. Also when converting the movie, I did not see anywhere in freemake that would allow me to change the language to English. Clearly, there has to be something im missing. Any help would be appreciated.

I know on mine (rooted stock) I just plug the NC into the pc, open the window copy/paste the avi's on it, and play using rockplayer.

When you rip the movie from dvd to mp4, you only get a single audio track. Think of ripping like playing the DVD Ave recording it. You are not copying all of the info that is on the DVD, just the info that would be sent to your TV.
In freemake, after you select the source and freemake looks it over, it puts it in the big box in the center of the screen. Towards the right side you will see a small flag icon. Clicking on this allows you to select which language track you want to rip. Be aware, for some reason these are often labelled wrongly. Several times I have had to use the track labelled French in order for the movie to be in English. I recommend using the preview feature to make sure it is using the right audio (language).
