Didn't someone say there could be an app causing the phone to go into that reboot loop, where the only option is to do the hard reset?

You didn't read that here. If so, I completely missed it.

I know I have no mentioned anything like this. All we know is regardless of OTA or manual update some people have experienced a boot loop where the device doesn't boot past the Samsung screen after the update is applied. Nobody has come up with a reason as to why this is happening all we know is a factory reset in stock recovery fixes the problem.

I got the OTA update today. First thing I noticed: No stock keyboard. I am offered only the Samsung Keypad (which doesn't allow me to turn off vibrate on keypress) or Swype.

Suggestions?

Try some of the keyboards from the Market...

I don't really want to experiment with lots of keyboards and their associated issues with permissions. What about the stock Gingerbread keyboard. Is there a way to get around Samsung apparently having omitted it from the OTA update?

I believe there is a Gingerbread keyboard from the Market.. I know if your rooted there is probably more options available.

Strange as it sounds I haven't heard much talk about the missing keyboard.

Gingerbread keyboard from the Market... Sammy/Sprint might have decided to leave it out just for this very reason, they knew of the free one in the Market which most people have probably installed.

Sorry you got some bad or improper information.

Here are some options all depending on where you stand currently..

1. If you are rooted and can boot back into CWM (ClockWorkMod) then you can attempt to flash a ROM to get out of the boot loop or stuck at Sammy screen. Follow the instructions below

Have either a ROM currently on your sdcard or download one and place it on your sdcard by removing it from your device and using a computer with a sdcard reader to place it on the card.

Then with the device powered off, Press and Hold Volume Down+Camera+Power and boot into CWM and flash the ROM.

2. If you are NOT rooted and stuck at the Sammy screen due to a boot loop from the official GB update then you have only 1 option to get moving again. See below.

Pull your battery. Place it back into the device and press and hold Volume Down+Camera+Power and boot into stock recovery and select factory reset/wipe data and then reboot and you should be okay. Unfortunately you loose your data as in settings, apps, text, etc.. Contents on your sdcard like Pics, Music, Videos will be okay.

3. If none of the above applies or doesn't work then you have one last option to get your device back up and going...

Odin back, Procedure #1

[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

Then do the manual update/OTA and if you choose once that is complete we have rooting instructions below.

I hope something I have mentioned here will help get you back up and running. Also in case nobody gave you the proper introduction. Welcome to Android Central :)

It's been ten days and I still don't have an OTA update.

What gives? Does anyone know how long the rollout period is? I feel like I'm the last Epic owner still on Froyo. I'm not really in a rush to get Gingerbread so don't want to do the manual install but it's been so long I'm starting to think something has gone wrong.

The OTA update will stay active for as long as Google & Sprint/Samsung decide to keep it active... FYI, OTA updates for Eclair and Froyo are still active to this day so that gives you an indicator...

You may just have somehow been missed in the rollout, so you could always attempt doing a update check in Settings/About Phone...

Otherwise there is always the manual method whenever your ready... So one way or another we can get you updated.

Note: Some devices from way back in the early release of the Epic 4g ended up stuck on early versions of Eclair 2.1 and had troubles updating OTA/manual update to Froyo but they were rare... I helped a few of these users out and once we did get them on Froyo they received future OTA updates. So it is possible to be "stuck" for some strange unknown reason... Before you ask, Sprint won't have an answer or solution for it either other than telling you to do a factory reset...

I just did a Profile and PRL update and after the radio reset by the PRL update it found the GB update and is currently downloading. Before that, the device would report no update available. Worth a try if you still haven't recieved the push...

Edit - Sorry, wrong thread.

Oh no... Quite alright... This is where most of the posts concerning GB should be unless its bug related then we have the other thread...

But as you can see some other threads were started up....

Glad you got your update.

Sorry if this has been answered! I did look through page 1 to 11 and 17 to the last and could not find and answer. I am rooted with CWM 2.X.X. I just got the OTA update message. Should I update my Epic or do I need to Odin back to stock and then manual it up to GB?

Being on the older CWM recovery it makes it a bit more difficult. I would really recommend to save alot of confusion to make your backups with Titanium/My Backup Root and then Odin back to stock Froyo EC05. Then update and root again then you can restore DATA ONLY to get your data back...

Good luck.

What do you mean Eclair/Froyo OTA updates are still active? They are still trying to push those out to phones? How can anyone now have Eclair by now? What happens to these people, more than a year later they get an alert telling them they need to update Android and they get Eclair?

Is the rollout over? If I was missed in the rollout does that mean my only option at this point is a manual update?

Eclair and Froyo are active still in the event of people who have had phones deactivated or have been reset by Sprint/Samsung back to an earlier date when repaired or refurbished. If you were to Odin back to stock Eclair right now you would still be able to receive the OTA to Froyo...

I would hold off if you want, many users today were still getting the OTA to GB... Otherwise you can just do the manual update.. Same thing...

Just got the update OTA...installed it...got boot loop....factory reset....now redownloading all my apps that were wiped out in the rest...which includes apps on the sd card....so yes you do lose stuff from sd card in a factory reset....so far phone seems more responsive.....but...really sucks to lose my apps.
