Just got the update OTA...installed it...got boot loop....factory reset....now redownloading all my apps that were wiped out in the rest...which includes apps on the sd card....so yes you do lose stuff from sd card in a factory reset....so far phone seems more responsive.....but...really sucks to lose my apps.

I'm curious to this losing stuff on the sdcard. Is it just apps that you had transfered to sdcard or installed on sdcard? Always in the past the sdcard was considered safe and you pictures, music, etc.. were always kept in place.

I believe that all I lost on the sd card is the apps i had moved there...music..pics...files are all still there....most of my apps came from the amazon appstore so I can get them back...but will have to start all over on my progress in the games.

When in doubt, Pull it out! ;) If you're worried a reset or anything else on your phone could delete things on the card, dismount it (to be certain everything is properly closed) then power off and remove the card.

Thing is I did have the card out when I did the factory reset. although now that you mention it I didn't unmount it before I took it out as I was stuck in bootloop.

Weird... I have done several factory resets and have never lost anything on the sd card.

Pull the battery, connect it to USB, hold 1 on the keyboard then hold the power button until the yellow downloading screen appears.

Then you should be able to use Odin to flash the stock FroYo EC05 ROM - then do the normal manual update to Gingerbread.

Once you have that, flash the kernel-GB-3.tar.md5 that removes the automatic recovery replacement. Then flash the ACSRecovery1.0.0.5.zip You do those two exactly the same way you flashed the EC05 ROM.

Now you can boot into recovery mode and install su-3.0-efgh-signed.zip to finish rooting Gingerbread.

After that the world's your oyster.

My OTA update finally appeared yesterday. Didn't take very long to process and had no issues at all. Thrilled that the Battery Charged popup and beep is gone, but disappointed that screen rotation still takes forever.

i've read through every page (that's a lot of reading) but i want to make sure i don't screw anything up when i update to GB.

here is a screen shot of my system. i am rooted and have cwm (the purple one, not sure if that's the one i need though)

since i'm rooted (i've gotten rid of most of the stock sprint apps so no, not stock rooted), it's my understanding that i have to odin back to stock eco5 then i can either run the update.zip or can run the ota. is this correct? which would be the best to do?

is there anyway, since i'm rooted, not to lose any data in doing the update? i would really rather not have to wipe my phone (again) if i don't have to.

and if paul doesn't mind...could someone please do a 1. 2. 3. guide on exactly what i need to do (again...really don't want to screw this up).

oh, also...i used mybackroot to backup data only, as i understood that with gb, doing the app method may screw stuff up. what is the best way (if there is one) to make sure you get your current apps back onto your phone? i realize i will have to manually install them (or am i wrong?) but will the market remember what i have if i have to wipe? or should i just write everything down the old fashion way?

thanks in advance for any/all help.

oh...forgot something. once i'm on stock/non root gb, do i just use this link to get rooted?

Hey lil rawr been awhile since I've seen you around ;)

Anyways.. You have the right idea. Do your backups with Titanium or My Back Up Root and once you come out on the other side and done rooting GB you can do DATA ONLY restores to your stuff .

As far as updating.. You have some choices...

1. Odin back to stock Froyo EC05 (Procedure #1) [How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone) Then do your OTA or manual update as instructed in the OP and then obtain root in the link you left to my tutorial.

2. Use qbking's video instruction/tutorial on updating via CWM into official GB. Not sure if you have ever watched his videos but he does a great job covering things...
http://forums.androidcentral.com/sprint-epic-4g/132176-acs-how-everything-ei22-gingerbread.html

FYI, you can use APPBrain from the Market to handle your apps.. It will remember and allow you to download and install all your apps very easily.. Then you can apply your DATA ONLY restores once you have root obtained.

Really its not a difficult process and I know you've been around this game enough to be able to handle it.

Good luck, hit me up if you have questions.

Paul.

you're quick paul...wasn't expecting a response so soon.

yeah...not much reason to post since i finally got my phone where i wanted it and actually working :) just waiting patiently for gb like everyone else. i was too chicken to do the gb nightlies...go figure...lol

have a couple more questions...

1. when i odin back to stock eco5, am i going to lose everything? this method does wipe the phone right?
2. and this may be a bit off topic, but exactly what is this wipe dalvik cache x3 thing i keep hearing of in reference to cwm? and do i need to do this at any point before or after odin'ing back to stock eco5 or is this just not required?

thank you for your expertise and advice!

Yes Odin will reset everything on your device.. Come out on the other side squeaky broken clean just like it was when you bought it... LOL

The dalvik or cache or data wipes, this is only when you flashing ROMs/themes/kernels/ etc.. in CWM.... So unless you doing some of those things I wouldn't worry about it. You get to that point, hit me up.

onthevirg71 used CWM on rooted EC05 to install the EI22 update.zip but then had to use Odin to update the modem separately.

Dunno if that would get around the automatic de-rooting that stock EI22 does.

Thanks. I went ahead and just wiped the phone. Figured I should start clean.

Everything went very smoothly. Took me a bit to figure out how to work that stupid Appbrain to get my apps back, but that's what Google is for right...

The only issue I've had was when I first set BT up in my Tucson. It froze during a test call and couldn't get it to sync back up. I finally had to do a battery pull and since then has worked like a charm. Now it's just a matter of seeing what the battery life is like during the work week.

Thanks again Paul and co.!

Eclair and Froyo are active still in the event of people who have had phones deactivated or have been reset by Sprint/Samsung back to an earlier date when repaired or refurbished. If you were to Odin back to stock Eclair right now you would still be able to receive the OTA to Froyo...

I would hold off if you want, many users today were still getting the OTA to GB... Otherwise you can just do the manual update.. Same thing...

I finally got my OTA update last night. When I first got the alert it wasn't a good time for me so I clicked to install later. I was nervous about doing this because I was afraid it wouldn't come back. I've read that you'll only get two alerts per day but I must've gotten an alert about every hour. I did the install on about the fourth alert.

Everything went as smooth as can be. One of my widgets was removed but I put it right back. And my background image was stretched across all seven home screens. Previously it was a small logo that could only be seen on the center screen.

The phone is mostly snappier. I've had it get bogged down once or twice but overall much more responsive. One of my biggest gripes seems to have been resolved and that's the keyboard no longer skips characters! For that reason alone I'm in heaven!

I read a lot of people saying that they can't turn off the camera's shutter but I have no shutter sound (it was turned off before the update). I haven't gone into my settings to see if that's one of the options but I wonder why I have no shutter sound when so many others complain they can't turn theirs off?

The final test will be the GPS. My GPS used to work incredbly well. Then a couple of months ago it started crapping out a lot. If this GPS problem is resolved I can probably live without a phone upgrade until the phone craps out.

One question though... In eclair there were a number of screenshot programs that worked without rooting the phone. With froyo screenshots required the phone to be rooted. What's the situation with Gingerbread? Any way to get screenshots without rooting my phone? This is the only thing left on my wish list; I miss the ability to take screenshots.

I think I'm going to avoid the Gingerbread bug thread. If it's broke and I don't notice it then it's not broke. As soon as I go into that thread I'm going to start looking for problems! LOL

@uscpsycho, sorry but you have to be rooted with gingerbread to take screenshots.

Screenshot it has a no root version out but you still need to configure it, download programs and drivers to your computer and hook your phone to the computer. I found rooting easier.

I always forget about this option, probably because I don't consider it a true screen shot program because you have to use your computer along with your device to make it happen.

But it is an option if your willing to go through the work.
