Email issues with Gear S2 and Galaxy S6

I have a galaxy S6 and just got the Gear S2. When I did the initial connection I could see some of my recent emails from my Exchange account on the Gear. However, it only updated once randomly and is not at all consistent with the emails in my account and I get no notification at all for new ones. There is also nothing at all for my Gmail.
Any thoughts on the inconsistent updates through the Gear email app? Also, is it possible to synchronize gmail or no?
