Email notifications don't clear if email is read on different device

[Android Central Question]

So I have a Gmail account. Email comes in, I get notified on my android and MAC.

If I read the email on my mac, the notification does not go away on my Galaxy s9. Is this normal? It would go away on my iphone that I recently switched from.

Welcome to Android Central! Are you checking your Gmail on the Gmail app, or on the stock Email app?

Iin gmail, (GMail, hamburger icon at the top right, Settings, Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab)

Enable IMAP (don't enable POP at all)

When I mark a message in IMAP as deleted:
to
Auto-Expunge off - Wait for the client to update the server.

and
When a message is marked as deleted and expunged from the last visible IMAP folder:
to
Immediately delete the message forever

Then save the changes (down at the bottom), of course.
