Would it be worth the effort to turn on the MHS for the weekend just in case my cable/internet goes down during Irene? or is it more then likely that the 4g/3g network will go down as well?

Im in North central NJ near VZW corp HQ.

thanks guys/gals

I'm not sure about the risks for each network "going down" during the storm. But, the verdict is not yet in on the cost of temporary MHS use. Still waiting for a temp usage report in this forum. Last I heard on this is when someone commented that there was something like a $20 minimum to turn it on/of for anything less than the 30 days. The whole month would be $30 unlimited (if you are authorized unlimited) or +$20/mo over your current $30 data plan (for a total of $50/mo) for 4GB total data, on tiered.

You could always curl up with a good book! ;) From my experience with hurricanes, if the power goes out, the cable system will go down relatively quickly whereas the cell network (and landline phone/DSL service) will stay up much, much longer as they seem to have better backup generators. Although, depending on how bad the damage is in the area, some government entities can work with the cell network providers to prioritize cell network traffic and voice calls to emergency personnel (police, fire, hospitals, military, etc.), so you may or may not get service anyway even if the cell network stays up.

Try installing the 2.11 gingerbread leak. It gave me free hotspot back for some reason.

I was told it should be pro rated for $1/day.. was I informed Incorrectly?
I have unlimited.

Yeah, I was too. And, let's face it, $30/mo is $1 a day. But... then someone else reported that they were told that it would cost at least $20 for less than a full month. So... sounds like they might have some minimum. Or, that person was just wrong. We need a guinea pig. And I'm not gonna turn mine off to find out :)

I mean, I suppose 25 days might be $25.00. But I don't know about less than 20 days.

Yeah, it was me. Because I turned it on for the full $30/mo and a partial cycle (i.e. 7 days or so) was billed at $1.00/day. However, I had no interruption in service. But, that does not mean if I had subsequently cancelled it 12 days later, that that part would have still been $1/day. Just depends.

Could not get them to give me unlimited mobile hot spot.

Got 2 gigs $20/month pro rated to 66 cents ($ .66) per day.
no change to my existing unlimited data plan, and can remove whenever I want.

Well, I'm confused. There is no 4G data plan that I know of (tiered or not) that includes MHS for $20. So... beats me what you got. Sounds like the older 3G pricing. May work at 4G, but sounds like the old 3G data plan (a'la iPhone).

One thing to remember about data prorating... if you're on a byte limited plan, it will be prorated by both days and data quantity. IOW, if you have a 2GB data limit, that means you are authorized 0.066GB/day, or 0.66GB in 10 days. If you were to use 2.0GB in 10 days and then cancel in 10 days, you would be prorated at $0.66/day for time plus a data overage of 1.34GB (at whatever the overage data charge is).

That's interesting it didn't give me a free hotspot .

Update*

I called to turn off my hot spot feature today... I asked how much data I actually used since I could only see a total with my normal data and MHS data together.

the rep (who was lovely) told me that Unlimited data plan 4g customers have unlimited MHS FOR NOW (might not be so in the future)

So I asked her to turn it back on :P
then we talked about Android phones and her dealings with idiot iphone ppl for almost 45 min. it was great I wish I could marry this girl lol.

:D
