Ending the Menu Key Argument for Good(Hopefully)

This thread was not initiated with the intention to end an argument but instead to start one. The mission was a success. I wish the moderators would put a stop to this.

These are the best kind of threads though.

the menu key missing is not the issue. There isn't suppose to be a menu key. The key that IS missing is the recent apps key.

Just out of curiosity is having a dedicated recent apps button that great? I have nothing to go on since I've not owned a phone with one. I like how the One is a double tap but I guess I could see a dedicated button being handy... I don't know that I'd be bothered either way. Just wanted to hear the pluses of the multi task key from those who miss it.

I was wondering this too. I rarely find myself closing apps in this screen, but I do toggle between them occasionally. I guess it could be useful.

Well I use the recent apps screen to jump from app to app all the time (sometimes don't see the home screen for hours) but I don't know where a dedicated button would be a giant improvement over double tapping home. Is there more functionality?

I don't like people that read three posts and comment on a multi-page thread. Come on guys, pay attention.

From Tapatalk, the first four or five pages of this thread were filled with intelligent conversation and terrific discussion.

It's a shame the few ruin it for the many.

I personally prefer having the recent apps key. One thing I'm not fond of with the HTC One is 3 functions being dedicated to the home button and before the One every other HTC phone(with ICS and beyond) had menu, home, and recents which is how Google prefers it so I'm not sure why HTC chose not to include it. I just wished more manufacturers went with the way Google decided to make the button layout. I don't mind them being capacitive as long as all 3 buttons are there.

Exactly why I won't buy either the One or the s4. It may seem petty but a heck of a lot of time is spent using the buttons and I hate the way both companies chose to do it. I also use Google Now every day. One swipe up from the bottom is much nicer than their lousy implementation of it

I don't know that using the multitasking button is that great, but I do us it all the time. Even if I didn't, I would prefer that OEMs use the implementation that Google designs for the purpose. It allows app design to be consistent across devices, making the hard work of developers just a little bit easier.

Having to double tap a home button that is less than responsive is a PIA. Then not being able to close all open apps with one touch is another PIA. Hopefully the 4.2.2 update will address some of these issues.

I must be lucky. I would describe my home key as anything but unresponsive. I could see the issue if the button didn't respond as others have complained about. Close all open apps though? I'm confused about the purpose of that. Can you explain further? I never close apps...

Edit: I'm really not trying to argue with you madlaw, I'm just trying to learn more. I could probably agree a dedicated multi task button might be better but I can do without. The double tap home works every time for me. I hope the non Sprint phones get that update to the buttons soon.

Also curious, does this mean actually close or remove them from recent tasks? Seems like actually closing would be very bad.

I believe it removes them from frequent tasks, but I think it will clear any data that is cached. I will sometimes clear the apps from recent tasks when they don't behave as expected and then reopen. It seems to bring me back to the Apps "home" screen.
