Engadget Awards 2011 - Tbolt is worst gadget of the year =(

Engadget is also iPhone-loving. Check out their Galaxy Note review for a laugh.

I have had my TB since day one when the store opened. I never suffered from the reboot issues but had two units replaced due to faulty proximity sensors which vzw promptly replaced. Since the last update and the rezound battery I couldn't be happier with my TB and I am confident that I will have it for some time to come as I have not seen anything that is currently available or on the near horizon that will inspire me to replace this smooth, dependable device.

It's at least awkward that the review to which Engadget links when you click the "Worst" designation ends with this paragraph:

"First-generation devices are often, if not usually, a little rickety -- proofs of concept that are more about the manufacturer (or carrier) being able to say that they're first to launch a particular feature than they are about delivering a solid, all-around winner. Fortunately, that's not the case with the Thunderbolt: HTC's managed to put together a handset here that we can honestly recommend with a straight face, owing in no small part to the fact that it borrows heavily from the company's existing parts bin. If you're looking for the sexiest 4.3-inch phone of the bunch, the Inspire still beats it -- you can't go wrong with the thinner, metal, unibody shell -- but the Thunderbolt is easily one of the best Android devices in Verizon's expansive lineup even before you take the LTE capability into account. And if you're lucky enough to live or work in an LTE market (or one that's going live this year), it's the best choice by a country mile."

Perhaps Engadget reviewer are the "Worst Reviewers of the Year"? :p

I was also fortunate in that my tbolt was a joy since day 1. I did have the reboot issue but it was fixed with the first software upgrade.
With the rezound battery, this phone is keeping me real happy. Sure, a sharper screen will be nice, but I just have no desire to upgrade. I feel like I still have room to grow into it.

I have to say. Since I rooted and got the extended battery, my tbolt has been awesome. It does everything I want it to do. Its my first 4g phone. Though I'm going to have to wait for a custom, complete, ics ROM, I still love it. Otherwise I'm glad I rooted and can try all kinds of ROMs.

The T Bolt was just a victim of being the first LTE phone on Verizon, thats all. 1 year later and we find out some, if not most T Bolt issues coulda been network related.

I'm sure there were other gadgets that could been seen as worse, phones on another carrier, tablets, etc.

And IMO any phone that came out with a few months left in the year doesnt deserve to be called best for ALL of 2011....looking at the G Nex, RAZR and Rezound...and I had all 3 at one point...lol.

The Tbolt is my first smartphone, purchased in mid-April 2011. When I bought it, I also lowered the number of monthly minutes on my plan, and minus my work discount, my monthly bill went up by $14.00 a month!

It has been the best $14.00 dollars a month that I have ever spent! I have the internet whenever I need it, a camera(just for snapshots), a Tom Tom to get around with, and a built-in TV. And a gaming system if I ever used it.

I was in the Verizon store today checking out the new stuff, and there wasn't anything that made me want to jump ship. I figure that I'll probably stay with the Bolt past my 2 year agreement, but, I like to keep my options open............Peace

I will admit that the "stock" TB is not the greatest phone going. But the worst? I dont think so. The TB has a great foundation to build on. Get rid of the stock battery, get a good launcher, add in a aftermarket Email and maybe even root it. WOW, the things you can do? It almost seems endless. My wife has the Droid X. My son has the Rezound. They are both great phones. Well, maybe not the X. Even when my next update comes around I can't see me going to anything else. So what if I have to wait an extra 20 seconds to load a youtube vid. You go ahead and prop yours up against a book or glass to watch it. I will just put my kick stand out and wait. It will be worth it.

I don't care what anyone says, my thunderbolt does what I need it to do and it does it well. I'm glad I just take what other people say with a grain of salt, otherwise I would have never ended up with this fantastic phone. Nuff' said.

I agree. Love this phone

I think the worse gadget should have been the iPhone 4s. Wow....they got SIRI, wow it has duel core, Wow, it has a better camera....wow, it still looks like the 4S, wow it doesn't do 4G.

Why don't they give that a WORSE gadget of the year. All Apple did was put some new seat covers on the old seats. threw a coat of SIRI wax and called it new?.

While the TB was far from being perfect, at least we got something NEW (4G). I think Verizon should put all our names up in the hall of fame for early adopters of the 4G and give us access to the executive lounge and give us the ability to upgrade at a supreme discount and early for our next phone.

EDIT (Yes, I understand the article was a review from Mar. of 2011): I just got done reading most of the article.....I can't believe they actually said there is no way to shut/switch to 3G?....are the ENGADGET people complete morons?. You don't need LTE On/Off app, you can get in there and do, takes a few more screens, but it can be done.

Also, I noticed, they pretty much gave it praises the whole article....why it got voted WORST I have no idea.

My Verizons reps that had Tbolt and switched to "better" phones have told me how much they miss their Tbolt.

I'm still happy with buying the Tbot when I did - Last spring it was the best choice for LTE on Verizon and as a bonus we got in on unlimited data just before it ended.

I totally envy you folks who had no problems with your Tbolts. Mine was a total pain in the butt until I rooted. It still drops a lot of calls and fails to indicate some missed calls occasionally, but it has been a great learning experience and I am glad that I didn't trade it for another model.

Iphone 4S on ATT with iOS 5.1 does show 4G when connected to hspa+. ATT considers hspa+ to be 4G.
