Engadget: VZW version is for consumers, GSM version is for devs

Re: Engadget: VZW version is for consumers, GSM version is for de

I read that the Verizon phone will still be getting updates direct from Google. I have to find where I read it but I believe it was from one of the usual sources. I'm not too concerned about it.

OK there's a bunch of misinformation on these apps. First the My Verizon is a widget its not a system app it can be can removed with out root. It only works when u first log in. If u never log in it does nothing. It is a great app and way better then the mobile sight. And is the most accurate data counter. The one to be concerned about is Backup Assistant that is built into the os deep. My question is will it include the new backup assistant the one that also backs up pictures and videos to the cloud. As to why my Verizon doesn't work on cm7 it could be a tweak in the build prop.

Re: Engadget: VZW version is for consumers, GSM version is for de

I'm going on the record to state that I highly, highly doubt the GSM version of the phone will get any sort of preferential treatment. If anything, I'd expect the Verizon version to get preferential treatment, since they're the ones with an exclusive deal in the US, and both Verizon and Google are American companies, so this is the version that their local markets will actually be using.

What is far more likely is that Verizon wants to include some minimal level of standardized apps since this phone will actually be sold in Verizon stores. I dunno, maybe the service reps use the backup assistant to migrate data from phone to phone or something, so they want every phone to have it. And as far as My Verizon goes, um, thats a useful app thats worth downloading even if the phone didn't come with it. This is the first Nexus device that Verizon has sold, so we don't really know how VZW and Google worked out the details of what would come pre-loaded. Why would you jump to conclusions?

VZW uses cellebrite.

I feel so much better now that you went on the record. LOL

This is from the 'source' himself...

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/android-building/qzSxFEqWvNg

The Galaxy Nexus family is codenamed "tuna". Using fish names in
relationship to devices isn't quite new, since in the past we've had
goldfish (emulator), trout (G1), mahimahi (Nexus One), herring (Nexus
S) and stingray (Xoom).

There are two actual Galaxy Nexus devices, codenamed maguro and toro.
Maguro is the GSM/HSPA+ variant, and Toro is the CDMA/LTE variant.
Toro is a bit fatter, hence its name.

In the source tree released yesterday, there are two directories
called device/samsung/tuna and device/samsung/maguro. The former
contains all the files that are common to both toro and maguro, while
the latter contains the maguro-specific files. There's no
device/samsung/toro in AOSP yet, that directory will get created when
we release the exact code that actually ships on toro.

device/samsung/tuna contains makefiles as if it was an actual device.
There's no such device in reality, but the abstraction is convenient
for engineering purposes as it allows creating a common system image
that works on both toro and maguro, even though it supports neither
GSM/HSPA+ nor CDMA/LTE. This is only meant for engineering purposes,
and the only real devices are maguro and toro.

Looking a little bit in my crystal ball, we'll be supporting toro in
AOSP along with maguro, with similar downloads for proprietary
binaries, and the whole process is tied to shipping toro. Be aware
that my crystal ball is rarely more accurate than a Magic 8-ball, so
you should take this with a grain of salt.

Personally, I prefer working with maguro, as supporting GSM in AOSP is
easier than CDMA in my experience.

^ It has "My Verizon" and "Backup Assistant"

So everyone is freaking out about it, its completely stupid.... imo

And no, just because it has two apps does not make it a Consumer phone or any different than the GSM version.

If anyone was running a company you'd see why they included those apps.

Not gonna effect me since I like the My Verizon app.

Not really. Most stores no longer have those and most push using backup assistant to the customers.

Ah, let me clarify...my local VZW store still uses their cellebrite. I should have paid more attention when my dad got his breakout to see what they did.

I know they used to use them around me but stopped because they said their system has not been updated in over a year so they just have everyone use backup assistant. Usually takes less time anyway.

God i love toro. Seriously. Toro is the best damn sushi ever blue fin tuna belly. Omg. I think that might be why i am sublimenaly drawn to this phone!

Re: Engadget: VZW version is for consumers, GSM version is for de

I think vzw has something up thier sleave for this phone. And i think it might have something to do with tethring. I am surprised i havnt sen more people voice concen for this. Vzw is staunchly against tethering. They have had the tethr apps disabled from market. They have phones that have shiped to other countries w/ unlocked botloadrs yet all of theirs are locked. I think we might be getting some surprises. I have no proof whatsoever, but an inkling. The "deep backup assistant integration" both wories me and alarms me a litle. Hopefuly we wil all be pleasently surprised, but knowing vzws past i am leary.

Well the system is being updated, not sure why they stopped:

Cellebrite System Prepped for Nexus Prime, Droid HD, and HTC Vigor

Does backup assistant work on older dumbphones? Not sure how they'd do it if that is the case.

I'm concerned also. When I was on T-mobile with the other Nexus phones, I could tether for free because it's part of the OS. I'd be surprised if Verizon let us get away with this like T-mobile does. I had heard that T-mobile would leave you alone as long as you didn't go overboard.

It would be nice if it was an alternative carrier with nice coverage like VZW. I think when a company gets big like them, it's bad for the consumer. Competition is always good IMO.

I don't care if they block tethering since I don't tether anyway. i think they clearly just wanted to keep other carriers from selling it first which is why they wanted exclusivity and didn't really want to sell it.

Re: Engadget: VZW version is for consumers, GSM version is for de

Developer phone = updates from Google. Consumer phone = 1 or 2 updates from Verizon until they don't update it anymore and wait for you to buy another phone from them in 2 years.

I seriously hope you're wrong about that. It would take all the wind out of the sails... eliminate the #1 selling point IMHO.

Has there really been zero official comment by Google or Verizon about the method of updates. I thought there was some marketing spiel about "pure Google" and if so, doesn't that at least strongly imply that updates would come from Google?
