Epic Versus Evo

Still personally think EVO is better.. Epic feels cheap, and don't like the over saturated Super AMOLED.

The Evo doesn't justify its proportions. It has a big screen, without having a higher resolution. It has worse battery life, without better performance, it is thick, but has no keyboard. It feels solid, but doesn't have gorilla glass. It's got a kickstand but can't play 720p mkvs. It has HDMI, but is capped at 30fps. I think the Epic is just a more balanced phone in general.

Saying it like that does make it harder for me to choose the Evo... :P I'm leaning towards the Epic now but I think I will need to try and find a sprint store to get my hands on them both to be certain.

I have a few weeks to wait for user reviews too, especially on things like the GPS.

I have to have a BlackBerry for work (rocking a Tour), but I have serious android envy. I've decided to indulge myself and add a line for personal use so I can get an Android 4g phone, and am undecided between the EVO and Epic. I like the simplicity, big screen, HTC quality and developer/hacker support with the EVO; but I also like the AMOLED screen and 6-axis gyro of the Epic. So - I will wait until I can get hands-on with both and let my gut reaction make the decision. Unless, of course, I win a free Epic! ;)

My thoughts exactly. Got to get to a store and play. There are so may things to think about its just to hard to reason it out.

I switched to the EVO (from a Pre) in July. I have to say that there is some part of me that misses the physical keyboard but it was just so small on the Pre it almost detracted from it's utility a bit. I haven't seen the Epic yet in person but the pictures make me think I'd like the keyboard. With me I'm torn between wanting a slim device versus adding some thickness to get the keyboard. To make things worse, the screen on my EVO is acting up (certain areas no longer accept touch input) so I may have no other choice than a replacement EVO for now. Although it sure makes me think more highly of physical keyboards.

The Epic doesnt even have Froyo yet... Are we really crowning it king on the first day????
See... Moment... Instinct...Intercept....
Samsung looked at those, and they saw failure. That is why they will not repeat the same mistake with the Galaxy S. They are in it to win it.
to say they are in it to win is a tautology. all companies are in it it win.

The real issues for us have to do with the changing smartphone market. those of us that are tech savvy have gone from the great majority of smartphone buyers to a tiny fraction.

And samsung did not see failure with those devices. do you think they saw "failure" with instinct? it was a great seller -- still is.

I had a sammy i330, that was in so many was a great smartphone, really a groundbreaking device -- except samsung never lifted one single finger to deal with problems.

I am willing to give samsung the benefit of the doubt. but there seem to be a lot of unfinished touches, missing features between the epic and other galaxies due to integration with the sliding keyboard . Sprint is not ATT and they dont necessarily have the ability to push samsung which is blowing out non keyboard galaxies like crazy.

So the real answer is that samsung has a bad history of updates/support and we will have to see. I don't mind giving them the benefit of the doubt, but it is a reach to say that you know somethign about their corporate culture for which you have no supporting evidence. Let's hold negative or positive judgment until we see the update (mu guess is Nov/December)

I have the Evo and the wife picked up the Epic....the colors on the Epics screen are amazing. She came from the Pixi and the Epic was love at first sight for her. I love my Evo but the screen on the Epic is truly impressive!

My argument with the current situation is that developers would rathe develop for one, possible two chipsets rather than putting out a crappy product. Its easier, costs them less money and is more enticing to them to develop for certain platforms.

No, it's the Sprint Hero.

Calling the thing that Sprint sells an HTC Hero is an insult.

I would kill for a modern phone with teh same styling as the International Hero.

Well according to the manual it comes with, it's the HTC Hero. lol! Yeah Sprint's marketing calls it the "Sprint Hero" however it's the HTC Hero made by HTC.

MS was not "in it to win it" with the Kin. They were "in it to fulfill a contractual obligation to verizon".

Samsung really is trying to make a name for themselves and make their mark with these Galaxy devices. Getting basically 7 different galaxy devices out within the span of a couple months is basically an unrivaled accomplishment. They wouldn't be able to do it if they weren't serious (4 US phones, Internation GS, Tab and whatever the "PMP" version is)

They make really good things in other fields, so if I get the impression that they want to be a real competitor in the smartphone world, I will give them the benefit of the doubt. If not, there's always third party hackers.

Edit: I do agree with you though that Samsung is looking at a different smartphone market than, say, Nokia was when they released the really nice and open source, geek-centric N800. Motorola for example seems to be completely ignoring enthusiasts with their efuse crap.

But it's not an issue.. The games are made for all devices, and work better with more powerful devices. Your obviously not familiar with making apps or code. Which allows them to set a certain performance in apps, that with better devices will work better.

Thats only IF the developers decide to code well. Things just dont magically happen the way you suggest they do.

I appreciate the discussion.

I ditched my Pre for the Evo but seriously considered waiting it out for the Epic in order to compare the two side by side. That phone just got so buggy and unreliable I had to let it go. When June rolled around, I just couldn't wait and went on and bought the Evo...no regrets. Those side sliders don't really appeal to me and I've adjusted to the touch screen kb just fine using Swype. I'm content with the camera, games, and speed of the Evo as well as the Sense UI. Yes, that Epic screen is beautiful and I am intrigued by the whole multimedia and improved gaming experience but it's really not a deal breaker for me. This is odd for me, typically I want the latest and greatest thing out but I honestly don't feel phone envy at this point. I am happy with my Evo and also happy that Sprint has such an awesome alternative superphone! Really, there shouldn't be a heated debate about these phones as they both are decent and can fill the needs of ppl based on their preferences..kb vs no kb, hard core gamer or not

Me too, but I would rather have the discussion with someone on background making apps like I do. Your need to read more into it.
