Epic Versus Evo

As an Evo 4g owner I can say that the amoled screen doesn't make me jealous (prefer my larger albeit not as sharp screen), and I don't care about a physical KB (never really been an issue), but I am jealous of the swanky powervgx gpu of the epic 4g.

I'm still not sold that the adreno gpu in the snapdragons are as bad as they seem, but qualcomm is just being too greedy/manufacturer's (I'm looking at you htc) are too cheap to pay for proper drivers to support this thing.

The big difference you will see graphics wise in this phone is that everything is optimized for the gpu cuz its in the same powervgx family as the iphone.

Also 4g is nice, but not having it is not a deal breaker for me. All in all I am proud Sprint is finally lining up some hardware to be proud of (that you actually want to show off). The epic 4g is a solid phone and is the envy of the whole galaxy s line, and probably of droid 2 owners (though they will NEVER admit it).

I really enjoy having the EVO. The larger screen helps make hitting the buttons better for fat fingers. Coming from a Moment, the EVO was an improvement. However, getting a Samsung slide keyboard with Froyo and 4G makes the Epic very attractive.

I have an EVO and love it, but I could see a real draw for the Epic with it being part of the Samsung Galaxy S line of phones...something about not being a complete one-off phone should have some synergy behind it. I don't think the screen is as big a deal, but it seems like the graphics power may have an edge over the EVO even in real-world usage (not just benchmarking utils).

[slightly off-topic, but a potential Android success story related to the Epic]
And with the shortage of EVOs lately, I think it may work well for my mom. After switching off her a minutes-only plan and merging with our Everything Data Family Shared Plan (which includes unlimited texting), my mom went from have an explicit ban on incoming and outgoing text messages to now sending over 370+ per month...on her feature phone no less!

And then she asks me the other day, "do you think a newer phone would make it easier to send texts faster?" :) after a few minutes I had her (a techno-phobe) ready for an EVO.

..but if the AndroidCentral gods could look with favor on my mom with the giveaway recently mentioned, they'll be helping bring my mom out of the dark-ages...and helping connect her with her grandson and new granddaughter!

I got the Evo. If this would have come out back when the other Galaxy S phones did, I might have gotten this.

I think the dev community is probably stronger for the Evo, and Sense is OK as those things go. But I'm still going to go play with one of these, as I'm in my 30 day window up until 9/13 or so.

I love the EVO but there's something about a software keyboard I'm having a hard time getting used to. It gets the job done, but with more mistakes than I'd like. It'd be interesting to see how the Epic works

I can't decide between them. I got a little more time before I can upgrade from the Hero so hopefully we will get some comparison reviews out on the net soon to help with that. However, if there are not EVO's in stock, that will make my decision very easy :)

I'm just gonna wait 'till next June and see what's out, then. Got the EVO and there are not any deal breakers than would keep me from waiting 'till my next upgrade. The Epic looks like a great phone and if one dropped In my lap, thank you in advance AC, then I would have to do some serious evaluating to decide which one to keep.

suggestion to people on the fence like me. You do get 30 days to return a device so I think I will just get one that is available and if I hate it, switch them out.

I love my EVO, but miss the physical keyboard my Palm Pre had. I have had several Samsung phones in the past, but really like HTC' Sense UI. Tough choice. they're both great phones. No loser in my book.

I have the Evo(which I got recently from switching from a BB). For me, I didn't really want a slide out keyboard. I assume for most people it will probably come down to if you want a keyboard or not. Both are great phones.

Merged about 9 of these Epic vs EVO threads together :)

That explains how my the thread I started suddenly got so long. And I was going to ask you for two entries to that drawing as a bonus for getting a conversation started.... :D

I've read through most of these posts and it seems that the consensus is mostly on screen size/resolution and the keyboard issue. I'm not a big gamer, but I do tweet as part of my job responsibilities. Plus, as I mentioned before, I have a personal preference for physical keyboards.

I'm nervous about the Epic being brand new, especially after the experience I have had with my Pre, but I'm leaning towards it. I have heard some bashing of Samsung phones in general, but my wife's Samsung phone is five years old and still works just fine.

Will go into the Sprint store tonight and make the final decision.

I do appreciate the input and comments.

I have the EVO and while it's not worth paying full retail to me I would swap to the Epic if offered. The GPU power is the deciding factor to me. I came from a Palm Pre and I miss my 3-d gaming.

That does seem to be the consensus, which puts people like me in a bit of a pickle. See I really don't want a physical keyboard, it adds bulk and fragility and I can type faster with Swype anyway. However, I also want a screen 4" or under. The EVO and the EPIC are definitely the top Android phones on the market and I'm torn... Oh well I guess I'll just wait for the next batch of phones :-)

I wanted to get an EVO for my wife for her birthday... I was on a waiting list at radio shack and sprint and they kept telling me they were gonna get some in. I decided I would pre-order the EPIC incase I couldn't get my hands on an EVO by then and get that for her instead. Looks like im going to go pick up an EPIC today...

what 3d game thats available for Android are you NOT able to play on the Evo. I have my evo rooted and have the FPS fixed and its 54 instead of 30 and the phone flies. There is no game out there that the evo was NOT able to handle yet.

It seemed everything I've read was that the 30fps was hardware limited and custom roms couldn't fix that, I guess that's not the case.

I believe you are incorrect. Samsung confirmed that it works and almost all of the reviews say the GPS is straight on.
Source: Samsung Epic 4G GPS Issues Done and Dusted ? Phone Reviews
countless other reviews.
No, I and everyone here knows you are totally incorrect.
All side by side reviews with other phoens show the Epics GPS is substandard.
You cannot compare it to Galxy, which has a broken GPS, the worst GPS of any smartphone on the market.

When you compare EPIC to competing models, Evo, the average blackberry, HTC's most recent WM (TouchP2, Treo pro and Touch Pro), droid one or two it the Epic GPS is less accurate and takes more time than not some, but ALL of them.

And you did not post a review. You posted form a UK site which never touched the phone and repeated a Samsung spin (and a spin samsung refuses to put in writing!)

Why don't you mosey over to PPC and XDA, and look at what people who know what they are talking about are noting from TESTS. The GPS on the Epic is a problem.

Yup, custom ROMs and kernels do fix the "problem" - while my phone Evo runs great with unlocked FPS, my g/f has a stock Evo and her phone runs great also.
