"Error getting selected files" -- Cannot select photos on my Pixel 4a 5G

Pixel 4a 5G. Android 14.

Trying to set up a photo and ringtone for a contact.

When I tap the photo and the sound I get the above error and nothing happens.

Help would be appreciated.

Check permissions for the Contacts app and File Manager app. Clear cache and data if necessary. Check file format and location. Restart your device, update your system and apps, use default apps provided by Google, and perform a factory reset if necessary.

Welcome to Android Central! What file format are the image and sound file? Is the image file jpg or png? Is the sound file mp3?
