Essential Apps for G4

1) HERE maps. No question. The best free maps app you'll ever use bar Waze and GMaps, mainly due to its superb offline navigation that works wonders if you travel often or have an inconsistent data signal.

This was indeed how I ended up with NavFree. Often use Google Maps on iPhone atm, but as you say it relies heavily on data traffic.

My work involves a lot of travel to far flung places in the UK (far flung being 70 miles away, lol)
So I like to have at least 2 mapping solutions on hand. And by mapping solutions, I mean Map Providers. So currently Apple, Google and OpenMaps.

Oh, and Pushbullet is another essential app. It's nice to have it integrated with your browser on your PC so that you can see notifications (texts, etc.) without having to grab your phone.

Yes! I forgot pushbullet in my original list. In addition to seeing notifications on your desktop, you can do the following:

- read and send texts on your desktop

- send stuff between your devices, as well as other trusted ones (like your wife) ... stuff being links, photos, documents.

Along that line I have two more must have apps that I forgot in my original list:

- pocket: quick bookmarking, synchs across your devices

- airdroid: control and interact with your phone via their website, including file management, upload and download.

I can vouch for that.

I installed it not long ago and it's simply a godsent to me as my phone is usually in the other room charging or when I am too lazy to get it.

Great suggestions, I'm going to have to look into some of these! I didn't know what Pushbullet does, for instance.

A simple one is Google Drive. It comes on the phone already, but I've finally started using it, and also installed it on my home computer.

It's a great way to deal with the problem of managing multiple copies of a document, for instance. If there's something you're editing at home, then also when on your phone (or on another computer), you can be working with a single copy of the document. Rather than trying to remember to manually copy the new version to the appropriate device, and getting out of sync.

Suddenly, grabbing a USB cable and manually copying things from the phone to PC, or vice-versa, seems so clumsy.

Other cloud apps provide the same functionality, of course, if you prefer another service.

No ads in Textra for me.

Good! I don't have them either but if they ever show up, that will be a deal breaker for me! I'd rather pay a few dollars to avoid unsightly ads!

Well, I take it back. Today Textra gave me a notice that my trial had expired, and I could continue for free, with ads, or go Pro.

For now, I selected stay free. The ads haven't shown up yet, but I'm guessing they're coming. I might buy it, I like the app.

I second Google keyboard. The OEM app and Swiftkey are just too laggy for me. Google keyboard is not. I only wish there were more than four customizations for it.

I don't mind using Google calendar either, over the OEM one.

Going to check out some of what the others have posted after I get my G4 fixed/replaced today.

Not that I use emojis but are there emojis for the Google keyboard

One app that I really say that is a must install if you have a low monthly data cap is Opera Max.

It saves you data.

Picked up my G4 yesterday. Pretty much most of the apps mentioned are installed.

The nice thing about modern tech so far, it's refreshingly different but at the same time quite familiar.

Thank you folks for taking the time to post the recommendations. 👍

BUT pushbullet. OMG it's like discovering garlic bread WITH cheese for the first time. It's awesome 😀
