Estimated tablet sales Xoom vs iPad

...and Dancing With the Stars gets better ratings than Breaking Bad and Dexter combined. I try not to base my opinions of things based on how hard they sell/how popular they are.

But I'd be willing to bet that the next generation iPad will take a lot of ques from the Xoom and other new competitors.

If these numbers are wrong, Motorola will jump in to dispute them. They actually have an obligation to stockholders to dispel bad information.

What we do know is that you can find lots of Xooms in stock everywhere but I don't know any retailer with iPad 2's in stock.

At $599, the WiFi Xoom did not have long lines waiting.
At $499, it could have matched the iPad 2's price.
At $399, it could have matched the original iPad's price.
At $349, the Xoom could have matched the refurb iPad price.

At $299, the Xoom would have had people waiting in lines to buy it.

If you are going to go after the established market leader you beat them on every spec and undercut their price. That is how Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, and Nissan did it.

The Xoom beat the original iPad on every spec but price.

doesn't the xoom cost like ~$350 just in parts? no way motorola would take a loss on them

People always forget to include R&D into pricing. OMG it only costs blah blah blah to make, why isn't it cheaper?!?!

Another thing to consider is that Apple makes a large sum of money off of app sales. Motorola only makes money off of hardware sales. Selling their products for a net loss makes no sense unless google would supplement the cost.

lol, you guys sitting here defending Motorola's price? you really think Motorola is making less than 50% profit on these things?

customers won't care about what motivation/excuses Motorola has, they simply won't buy an expensive, less useful products.

parts was $280

Thanks

Exactly, if it takes $280 (JUST IN PARTS) ...then add on another $100 for r&d, marketing, manufacturing, and distribution

i dont know how you can call it expensive...the 32gb xoom is the same price as the 32gb ipad 2

right, and 32GB iPad IS expensive, competitive pricing with apple doesn't mean its inexpensive.

Apple never make <50% profit. And Motorola should consider less profit to grab marketshare. Competitive price without competitive fan-base is not what Motorola can rely on.

what? No. no no no

Motos profit on this is probably not that high, which is why it will be very interesting to see what ASUS does with their price.

My thoughts on the Xoom sales are simple.

I really like mine and am getting great use out of it. It was well worth the money and don't have a single regret on the purchase. I don't care what the other 99,999 Xoom users think nor the 2.4M iPad2 users.

The value I place in things is determined by the use they give me, not the number of people who I can say also have the same thing as me.

Well said, and I'll second that.

I specifically bought mine for what it is capable of, not because 1,000,000 other people like it.

same here...i love putting pdf's on my xoom to study on..much easier than reading from a laptop screen

anyways, most of my classmates have the ipad2...when they get an email, or any type of IM, they have to close out of what they are doing, address the email/im, and then go back. Most of the times it forgets where you left off, because the multitasking sucks on it

All the while, I can do everything with no issue at all, and I get notifications on the bottom right without even having to close out of the pdf file. I can choose to ignore it or deal with it without having to close out of the program...epic win on the xoom's part!

To fix the random lag, I just downloaded Fast reboot and it does the trick

Fast reboot? Vs something like System Panel to simply close idle apps and clear up memory.

Fairly new to Android so just curious if one has an advantage over the other?

The fact that IOS fans feel the need to come to our forums and troll is enough to convince me that they are slightly threatened by Android.

I don't care about any of Apples products and never will. I don't have any desire to live in a box and only look at square icons all day. I like having my multitask support, OS, scrollable widgets, blah blah blah. I love the diversity I have with Android and I wont ever trade it in for a shoe box with limitations.

I wouldn't worry at all guys because every little thing is gonna be alright : )

Neither do I care about sales too much. Sure, I want to see enough Zooms sold to keep the updates to the hardware rolling in but I have faith in Honeycombs future and I don't worry at all about the availability of updates for that.

Would you pay $2,000 for a windows laptop?

How about $1,000 for a Core i3 desktop?

Apple fans are willing to pay krazi prices. No one else is.

you're talking about the costs of materiel again aren't you? I thought I went through that earlier...

From a personal and business user stand point... I like what the Xoom offers that the ipad doesn't. I also try not to compare or think the Xoom is trying to beat the ipad, it's just filling a niche that the ipad isn't.

The Wall Street Journal estimated cost per unit at $278. If the on contract price were $399, then Motorola's subsidized gross per unit is $599.

That allows nearly a 60% gross margin on variable costs.

As to fixed costs, Google does the design on the software and this flagship has to be a pure Android. Whoever really makes the hardware is the one who has the hardware design costs.

When you're a year late to market sometimes you have to buy your way in.

Motorola missed only one spec, price.

It looks like Samsung will not make that mistake.
