I was on the phone with technical support asking them about why my Eris is always showing 1x reception at my house and in the areas near it while others with VZW with different phone have EVDO/3G showing. The tech guy said that even when connected under 1x that I am getting 3G speeds since 1x is now upgraded to 3G speeds. Is the tech guy right or is he blowing smoke? I can't tell if the speeds I am getting really full 3G speeds. They kind of feel like the lower end of 3G, but only thing I can really compare it to my wifi connection, but that not really fair as wifi is faster. So should I go to a store and have my phone switched or is there nothing to worry about? thanks.

He was blowing smoke... no 1x is no where near the speed of 3G. There is nothing wrong with your phone actually either. It seems as if the latest HTC devices on Verizon are all suffering from this issue of getting stuck on 1x. The Touch Pro 2 is doing the same thing. Look for it to be fixed with the upcoming update.

Well I feel like when the phone shows 1x that my speeds like go down or quality of my data connection goes down? Is that part of the issue, and upcoming fix, or is this wrong?

Well the rep was telling me that 1x connection on their side has been upgrade to like 3G speeds and that in the past 1x meant 2g/2.5g.

yea, unless it's an issue of the phone not showing when it has a rev.a or 3G connection, there's no way 1x speeds are really comparable.

it's like AT&T saying their edge and 3G networks are basically the same. bs with a capital s

you can download the speedtest.net app in the market and see what kind of speeds you're getting, on 3G i get about 2.9 down about .9 up (in Mbps)

you could also try dialing *228 option 2 to see if that maybe gets you better reception

Yeah tech support made me do the *228 option already it was no dice from what it seems. I will try speedtest app and see what I get.

I got .32Mbps up and .42mps down. I am pretty sure that is pretty bad specially under full bar 1x-1 bar EVDO. Any ideas? Should I go to store and ask for another one because I am not getting full speed or this normal? BTW I am in southern California so I would expect my reception for the most part to be pretty good.

So I spoke to another tech support person today and found out the first person was for the most part blowing smoke about my connection. However, he did say that a software update that will come on the 11th of this month will fix my issue. He said there is a known issue with the Eris not getting constant 3G and not using full 3G speeds. He also said the update will include a more accurate GPS reception and google nav.

So after a few days of using the update it seems like it has worked, but I am still noticing a few idling issues. I notice when I am in the market place that apps are downloading and I am browsing slower than it should. It would idle first(D below 3G) before any data activity occurs. Then in the middle of a download I would see it idle(again D below 3G). Its better when browsing, but still notice some idling as I browse the web. I also noticed a similar thing in Google Maps. Should I go take the phone back to get it replaced or is this normal? Could it be due to the fact I am inside my home?
