Ever wonder why Box gives away so much storage?

I used to agree, but Box has made changes the last few months that I really like. Their UI now works a lot like dropbox did.

The Box UI may be similar to Dropbox but there are some big differences under the hood, especially on the PC side where synching is concerned. I recently upgraded my computer. Getting my data on the new PC was easy with dropbox. I just copied the Dropbox folder across and Dropbox sync spent about a half hour validating the files and all was good. Note that this wasn't using the Drobox lan sync, I just restored the files from my NAS.

Box had several hissy fits. First off, the new Box 4.0 client requires jumping through a lot of hoops to get it to point somewhere besides the c:\ drive. I've got an SSD for C: and a bigger spinning disk where I keep my synched data. I had to go through Box support until a point release supported using the D: drive. Then it turns out tere is NO support for simply copying the files from the old hard drive to the new one. I got a billion errors about file name conflicts and Box starting downloading copies of files I already had. It turns out that Box either wants you to re-upload the files or re-download the files from their servers. I have 95GB of data being synched; that would take a month. The files are sitting right there on my NAS! Gah.

Yes, that's another problem I've noticed with Box, but didn't know this much about it, thanks for pointing that out

I'm a fan of redundant systems. This trick will work with most of the services at the expense of some folder clutter. Simply nest one cloud service drive inside another. I was using d:\box\dropbox. If one service goes belly up, the other has it covered. Add frequent backups to my NAS and I've got 1 local backup and 2 cloud backups. Not much in the way of versioning beyond what each cloud covers.

It's worth $24 to test the waters with google since they do have good versioning. I'll see how d:\drive\dropbox works. It's going to take for freaking ever to get everything pushed across to google but c'est la vie. Short of S3's bulk disk import via physical disk, there's not much choice otherwise.

The main reason I didn't want to go to S3 is that S3 hosts dropbox. I want to keep dropbox and having all my data on S3 just seemed like a bad idea since it really eliminates the redundancy I want.

I'll admit, I like Dropbox's UI, but hate the fact that they offer such small space as a base. I actually find both Box and Drive to be just as easy to use.

I have a OneDrive account but I never use it.

Haters gonna hate, I guess.

Please explain how Outlook.com or Bing (or Metro, which isn't even a product, but a design language/philosophy) has left a bad taste in your mouth.

Or do you just not like Microsoft and feel the need to trash one of the best consumer cloud storage services on the market, which they happen to offer... In a 3.16 MB package Microsoft managed to do everything relevant that Dropbox or Box does in their apps requiring a package over 3x that size, in a sane way unlike Google+ Auto-Upload which decides randomly to ignore its settings and eat your data plan away...

I'm not seeing the connection there. SkyDrive has decent storage sizes (amazing if you're grandfathered - in that case you should have at last 28 GB for Life, unlike those gimmicky OEM promotion). Size Limits for Uploading and Downloading are entirely reasonable (Box has had some issues with this in the past, not sure if they remedied it), and it integrates fabulously with Windows 8.1 (better than any other Cloud Storage solution on the market). For those who would want to pay for storage, their pricing is quite reasonable...

If you use other Microsoft services, than it gets even better.

The person didn't ask for your personal biases about the company that makes the product. He or she just wanted to know if anyone used it and probably what they thought about the quality of the product. It's true... Microsoft can make a decent product, too.

Lets keep the discussion civil and not let personal feelings/comments get in the way of the discussion.

Thanks!

I don't recall saying anything about Outlook.com. I am pretty sure I said "Hotmail"...please reference my original post.

Metro was imposed on us in Windows 8. Even on WP it is a closed system and restricts many options. The Metro philosophy in general is one of a walled garden, which I despise and would like to see go away. They want to follow Apple's model where they design your experience for you, whether you want it or not.

As for Bing:

The phone does not use Google as its default search. And it doesn't utilize Yahoo! either. No, the Fascinate search engine defaults to Bing. Bing is used for the homescreen widget. It is defaulted to in the browser. It is present across the device... and there's no way to choose a different search engine. Like, you know -- Google. When we pressed Verizon reps about this, they let us know in no uncertain terms that the stock engine is Bing without a second choice.

Samsung Fascinate review

That is the kind of crap Microsoft would LIKE to do if they can get away with it, and it is why I can't bring myself to trust them. If they ever pull this crap with Windows, I will be looking for another desktop OS too. It's obnoxious.

Yes, that must be it. It is just blind fanboy hatred. What other possible explanation could there be? Microsoft is perfect for everyone and anyone who does not like there products must just be a hater.

Lets go with that.

How fortunate that they came across you, who has no biases at all.

Setting a default search engine has nothing to do with the quality of that service.

Outlook.com is Hotmail. It's the same service relaunched under a new name. Kinda like how One drive is Sky Drive.

Still makes no sense. One Drive is a top rate cloud storage service.

So why force people to use it? If it is a better service, won't people use it anyway?

Microsoft's agreement with verizon forbid them to allow the end user to change the search engine. Microsoft took that option away.

Outlook.com is Hotmail.
So what? My criticism was based on my experiences with HOTMAIL, not Outlook.

It's the same service relaunched under a new name.
Therefore, what...my experiences with Hotmail suddenly no longer count as experiences with Microsoft? lol

Still makes no sense. One Drive is a top rate cloud storage service.
Then my criticism should not matter right? Why does it matter to you that I criticize One Drive if it is so objectively obvious how awesome it is?

The OP asked a question and I answered it. Your opinion is not more valid than mine by default.

Okay guy. I get it.

My answer is more relevant and informative. Perhaps you should take that route next time.

No biggie. Your choice. Later.

Okay have we beat this up enough? Discuss fine, get personal over this stuff and it loses interest to everyone viewing real quick.

Anyway, to get back on track, I really think box could be a good solution. For many it might be already. But for me personally, until they allow a auto upload option for my photos or open up their API the third party apps to access, it's not going to be mainstream .

You don't have to pick and choose. You can have both.

I used to use Dropbox for everyday stuff and Box for my long term storage. Box's UI improvements are what switched me over. You could use Dropbox for stuff that needs to sync and Box.Com for mass storage for long term. And even OneDrive or Mega for backups as well.

The 50 gigs is what make Box appealing to me...if I was limited to a 10 gig free account I might not have switched to it from Dropbox as my primary.

I will say that the MS cloud drive worries me because of the morality clauses in their terms of service. If your data is the least bit prurient they can close the account. I never like having to worry about someone else's morality impacting my data.

serious question: why are some folks saying box has syncing issues? i've never had a problem in the least....what am i missing?

in windows 7, in libraries, i have folders for all my clouds..drive, box, dropbox, and one drive. i just drop something in any of them, and they all sync well.

Last time I attempted to use Dropbox and Box, I was limited to the size of the file I can upload. I use Mega now because it has no hard limit on file size and the app is really nice with autosync.
