Evo 3D vs. Galaxy Within

I'm not even thinking about the GSII. Touchwiz sucks. SAMOLED+ is great but I'm nowhere near convinced that you would really tell the difference from a really good SLCD (like on the 3D) w/o looking at them right next to each other and I would rather have the better resolution and aspect ratio. The Evo 3D's adreno 220 is better than the GSII's Mali 400MP (see benchmarks below). HTC's build quality and developer community has always been better. The 3D movies, pictures and games are just a cherry on top

benchmarks that matter:
AnandTech - Hands on and Benchmarks of two MSM8x60 Phones - HTC Sensation 4G and HTC EVO 3D
AnandTech - Dual Core Snapdragon GPU Performance Explored - 1.5 GHz MSM8660 and Adreno 220 Benchmarks
AnandTech - Samsung's Galaxy S II Preliminary Performance: Mali-400MP Benchmarked

I'm really really hoping the lower light pics and videos in the 3D are vastly superior to the Sensations. I'm disappointed that the iPhone4 stills pwns us in regards to freakin pic/video quality. I don't use my phones camera very often in superior day-light but always find myself wanting to use it in a restaurant or a party. EVO 3D seems to have a very high focus on its camera with it being 2d and 3d so here's hoping its awesome in something besides high noon.

I'll get the Evo 3d the day it comes out I need a new phone... that being said if the Within comes out within 30 days of me getting the E3D I'll return it in a heartbeat. I don't hate HTC I just love SAMOLED screens too much to give it up (rockin the Epic right now). Of course if I hated Touchwiz as much as a lot of people I might be less inclined to buy it but I don't and I can always put launcherpro up.

True but the S2's display is amazing, much better than the 3D so less resolution is fine. They may be the same spec wise but the S2 is the fastest phone available proved by its quadrant and benchmarks. The 3D should be a great phone, but it wont be better than the S2 and may not even be better than the Motorola Photon coming to Sprint as well this summer.

"Amazing," "much better than the 3D"? How do you figure that? I mean, if you enjoy SAMOLED screens, then I can see picking it over LCD, but I really don't see any evidence to support your view of it being so much better...

Personally, I can't stand everything looking so blue, so I'll be taking my higher resolution screen (that's actually quantifiably better).

I'm tempted to read the SGS2 and Nexus S forums to see if someone is trolling hard core about the Evo 3D...

Thats why there is a such a big difference in quality.

You don't have to tell me twice. After using the Instank, Intercept briefly, and giving them one last shot with the Epic 4g. I can SAFELY say that Samsung is utter **** and the Epic 4g was the last phone I was ever going to buy from them.

On the Instank alone I can't even count how many promises of updates they made so it would "rival" the OG iPhone.

Samsung, at least in the U.S. is f*cking trash and HTC demolishes them in quality by a mile.

Edit:

Anandtech seems to think the qHD screen is pretty nice too.

I'm still a fan of the good 'ol RGB stripe present in LCDs, and unlike other qHD LCD displays (like in the Atrix and Droid X2), the Sensation and EVO 3D both are free of Pentile. I think they look brilliant, and even though I'm still skeptical about qHD until it's officially added to the Android supported resolution table, I was pleased with the increased resolution available when browsing web pages.

So, with no official release date and rumors that release of the Evo 3D could be slipping into early July, is anyone else considering holding out a bit longer and jumping on the Samsung Within (Galaxy S II) instead, which is now rumored for a late July release?

If it really does end up being a difference of only a few weeks, I might opt for the Within. I don't care much about the 3D, and beyond that the technical aspects of the phones look fairly similar. The Within is very thin, which would be nice. (I haven't heard if 4G has been confirmed for the Within, which would be a deal breaker, but I can't imagine it wouldn't have it.)

Curious what other people are thinking- has the wait for the Evo 3D left you reconsidering?

The within is a pretty nice looking device, but from what ive been seeing with changes as an employee of sprint it looks like the EVO3D will be released on June 24th. They are having us change planograms on the 23rd, which is a Thursday.. knowing sprint, they never do this unless they are releasing something huge and soon..Thats enough evidence for me to expect it on that date..

They may be the same spec wise but the S2 is the fastest phone available proved by its quadrant and benchmarks.

Those results are erratic at the best of times and in this case are useless as a comparison due to the difference in resolution and processor operation (asynchronous v.s. synchronous).

Evo has a 960x540 qhd display (compared to S2's 800x480), Sense 3.0 (compared to the POS known as touchwiz)

As for me, I don't really make a big deal out of resolution as long as it's an adequate number. 800x480 is plenty good and I'm not going to be staring at my screen from 2 inches away. Sense and touchwiz are subjective as they appeal to different people. I actually kind of like the new touchwiz (tried it on my epic and it was actually kind of intuitive and cool to use. :)

Now lets talk about build quality. To be honest, this really isn't debatable. Samsung makes absolute trash quality phones. Ive YET to hold one high end Samsung phone that didn't feel like a cheap toy. HTC blows Samsung out of the water when it comes to the quality of their devices. Its seriously not even close so ill just end it with that.

but at the end of the day they're BOTH absolutely amazing phones that would wipe the water with almost anything else out there.. They both have their pros and cons. Either choice would be an absolute win.

Build quality is something of personal preference (some people like plastic and some people like metal. And there are some pros about plastic over metal. It's lighter, doesn't dent, and other things I can't think of right now. And seriously, you have to remember, it's just a phone, it's not like you're buying your damn car! :P

You are right however, you can't be wrong if you get one phone of the other

Benchmarks are hardly credible and should never be taken seriously...

Videos sure do prove its real world speed and performance are unmatched (at this time)

I've personally never seen an Android handset that is as smooth as the GSII. I'm not going to bash a manufacturer that has built what I percieve to be the best handset of 2011. That MAY change when other handsets are released but right now I dont see a phone out there that can compete with it performance wise.

EVO 3D is nice but I give the GSII my vote.

I'm not a fan boy, may the best tech win.
Specs which matter to me:

1. Dual core (must)
2. 1GB Ram (must)
3. Screen quality
4. Camera

I just pre-ordered E3D over galaxy S2 because I want to try a new experience "3D", I hope it's worth the hype, plus I have 30 days to return it.

Biggest hole in E3D is "NO NFC"!
E3D with NFC, no brainer no thoughts of 30 return.

I shall enjoy tech without falling in love with a product banner.

NFC is stupid , it didnt work with credit cards so why the big deal now. Evo 3d is a new experience with its rewind time picture features and freakin 3d. Sg2 is just a regular dual core high end phone with crappy build quality (oxymoron i know), The only advantage the galaxies had were the GPU and that advantage is gone with this generation. Qualcom chips have proven much faster with 4g than other dual core phones, thats a single core snapdragon vs dual core tegra. (Youtube it). SAmoled screens are overrated, u can see gaps inbetween the pixels and they do not consume less power, my freinds epic dies one hour before than my evo does. I have tried all the cell providers out there (except verizon) and i have found my home with sprint and HTC, They listen to their customers, and get them software updates lightening fast, evo just got gingerbread and galaxy recently got froyo. Thats a fact. Face it Galaxies are the iphones of the android world, in terms of mass adoption and not product copying. QHD all the way, thats why 1080 looks better than 720 no matter what the brightness setting is. Again Fact. My vote is for Galaxy S2 lol

I am amused how they're trying to make a processor seem faster by comparing two different networks.

Its like saying your atom netbook on wireless n is faster than someone else's quad+ core desktop on wireless g based on nothing more than download speeds.

Benchmarks are crap, never take them for granted...

I usually don't. overall benchmarks are usually garbage and cpu benchmarks don't really depict how responsive a phone will be. BUT, gpu benchmarks (which is all i posted) are usually a great indication of how well games will run on the device.

This is a hard choice to make.

Both phones are great, originally I wanted the GS2 but wanted to give the Evo 3D a shot... I think I really want a qHD SAMOLED+ screen to stop the debate in my head.

I like the way HTC phones feel but the love using Samsung phones, mostly because of their displays.

Tough choice

If they announce 4G on the Within, Im sold. That is an amazing phone.

Im getting kind of wary of the 3D because I havent heard good things about the Sensation. It seems pretty laggy.
