Another Pre convert here.

I have used all things Palm since my first PDA in the early '90's. Went through handspring, then to the treo's, went from 755p to palm pre Sept. of last year. I like webOS and was hesitant to switch. But I started having hardware problems (again) last month and couldn't take anymore, went to get my 3rd replacement and asked to be put on the waiting list for the EVO. I happened to be there at the right time because a shipment had just come in. I played with it all weekend, and I couldn't love it more. I love the apps - so many to choose from!! The screen size is AWSOME, and my battery life is comparable to what I had on my pre. I'm very happy I made the jump.

i have only had my EVO for a couple of days (who knew they would be so hard to get). in this short amount of time, i can see that i definitely made the right move in getting rid of that Palm PRE (Palm should stab themselves in the face for dropping the ball like that on such a hot setup). i have seen the phone hang up a couple of times in applications, but we'll see how it goes. this is the last phone i try out before i just bite the bullet and get an iPhone. i am seeing that what used to be dead spots with my PRE are actually 4g spots with the EVO. WOOT!!!!!so far so good. come on 2.2 for bluetooth voice dialing. that is the last thing i need in order to stay with Sprint and the EVO

Just Ordered My Evo online

I just ordered an EVO on-line from BestBuy.com for my wife. (My upgrade is next month) I can't wait to pick it up tomorrow. I'm going to play with this thing for a month and then decide if I too should get an EVO or get the Epic.
This will be my 1st Android OS smart phone. Previously I have owned a Palm Treo, Samsumg Instinct, Samsung Ace, Blackberry Curve 8330, and a Blackberry Tour 9630. I have played around with my sister's Motorola Cliq.

P.S.-This is my first post on this site. I think it's a very informative site.

Blackberry Converts?

Hi i have an EVO on order and am coming from a Blackberry. I would love to hear what other former Crackberry's have to say.

I see a lot of Pre converts and that is understandable.

I am just anxious to hear if BB users find the EVO a good device.

Let me know if this should be a new thread?

Is this a you thing or an Evo thing?

Gotta give it 24 stars - Bluetooth control is seriously lacking. Also today calls were not going to the headset properly and I ended up having to using it at the ear, which seriously slows me down.
Are others having an issue with bluetooth or is it just your phone?

I have one (on order)coming and Bluetooth calling is a must!

Well after a crazy ordeal with Best Buy, I finally have my Evo. I walked out of there on Wed. my Evo and $65 worth of gift cards for the inconvenience they caused me. (Very long story)

P.S. I love this device!!!! It's my wife's, but I've been playing with it all day. I don't think she has gotten a fingerprint on it yet.

I finally got the EVO: I walked into Best Buy and they had only one left. Yay for me!! Anyway, had the Palm Pre and don't miss it ONE BIT! Absolutely love the EVO.

I am use to call answering on the 1st ring with the TP2. The Evo requires I tap the headset button to connect. My hands are filthy...

I am also use to being able to move files back/forth on the TP2 using Activestink via Bluetooth. The ability to mass move files via Bluetooth is handy. Having to connect a USB cable to the Evo means I gotta bring the cable with me...PDANet with the TP2 worked with Bluetooth. I cannot for the life of me figure how to do it via Bluetooth on the Evo...Headset announcement to the Blluetooth on the TP2 means no one hears the phone doing anything. The Evo - the world hears it ring, hears notifications, et cetera....When doing voice searches, the EVO uses the internal speaker, the TP2 uses the headset.

So, Bluetooth on the Evo just plain bites.

VERY happy w/ my EVO!

I really like my EVO! I've had it for about 2 weeks now. I came from the Palm Pre, so yea.. you know. This is my introduction to the Android craze and I can't believe I waited this long! I think my opinion is slightly biased since I was so unhappy with my Pre but here's what I think.

I like the depth of the phone. Pretty limitless if you think about it and that's stock. Haven't looked into rooting it but I'm sure that will open it up more. I seem to have improved signal strength (vs Pre). I like HTC Sense, although the first couple days I thought it was a little much. Camera is improved from my previous phone (Pre) Touch screen keyboard is easy to use and get used to, this one is big because coming from a phone w/ a keyboard to this was scary. I like the 4 touch buttons on the bottom of the phone. (vs the physical button on the Pre and Moto Droid line) I love the speak to text input option, works everytime! I've had no problems w/ Apps working on this phone, looking thru some of the feedback on Apps it looks like a lot of phones have trouble w/ Apps working on them. Screen is beautiful! Afraid I will never settle for anything less than a 4" screen ever again. I like the style of the phone as well. Sleek, curvy and smooth...

Some things I'd like to see improved:
Speakerphone is so so.. Overall build quality, it just feels a little cheap to me. Not a huge fan of the camera lens not being flush with the back of the phone, afraid it's bound to get scratch/damaged one day. Battery life.. yea the same thing everyone complains about but really this is minor to me, I always had Samsung phones and they were TERRIBLE on battery life. I'm fine charging daily but still it would be great to have a iPhone like battery on my EVO.

Software; I'd like to see a collective inbox for multiple email accounts (unless there's a way I don;t know of..). This was hard for me to get adjusted to on the Pre but once I didn't have it on the EVO I realize I miss it. Easier delete/uninstall options, loved the swipe away style of the Pre and find the way on the EVO to be a pain. Lastly the way the EVO opens applications as opposed to the Pre. I wish the EVO opened new "cards" when you went from contacts to mail to messaging..

Overall I think this phone is great. I don't see myself getting fed up w/ it after 6 months like I did with the Palm Pre.

Here is a cool solution to transfer files from a computer back to the EVO, without bluetooth, or usb cable. You just need to have web access on your computer and one of the browser rendering html5 (not IE). Then just use that app: Awesome Drop (File Sync) - Android app on AppBrain
It's pretty cool.

So, I've had my EVO for a week now, and I'm extremely impressed! 9.7/10 easily, and although it's not perfect, I prefer it to ALL other smartphones out right now.

Hardware
Despite the hardware problems that seemed to plague the earlier hardware versions, the newer revisions seem to be just fine. I purchased a white HTC Evo (HW003) and have absolutely ZERO hardware problems. No light leakage, no screen separation, no loose/squeaky parts, etc. The Evo feels nice and solid and has a nice weight to it. The back feels a bit too plasticy, but it's nothing major. The HUGE 4.3" screen is absolutely stunning and takes advantage of the entire "slab" of hardware rather than leaving a big annoying bezel around it. There's no way I could ever go back to a screen smaller than 4". As others have stated, the only problem I have with it is the way the camera isn't flush with hardware and risks getting scratched whenever the phone is resting on its back. However, I have a 1mm thin case on my Evo that is enough to keep the camera off of the surface, so it's not an issue for me. Overall, I love the design of the Evo!

Software
Coming from BB OS and iOS, the Evo is my first experience with Android. I would definitely say that Android is by far the best. It's very snappy, has true multitasking, and is simply a great operating system. I feel like I'm on a computer OS, although simplified. iOS 4 is competitive, but it seems to cater to a different group of people, and I think Android would be better for most. Not only do I think it looks the best (especially with Sense), but it also offers the most customization options (ie. a new "feature" of iOS4 is wallpapers, seriously?) and it's an open market so you don't have to worry about Google deciding what apps you should be allowed to run, unlike Apple. This is great for people who love "sketchy" apps such as emulators. Some may prefer the simple and straightforward, although restricted, interface of iOS, but most would be better of with Android, especially with the attractiveness of Sense. And as for BB OS, it doesn't even compare.

Battery Life
I was a bit nervous about the battery life of this phone before I bought it, but after receiving it I concluded that the issue was blown out of proportion. Before rooting, I was able to make it through an entire work day (about 8 hours) using auto-brightness, at least an hour and a half of wifi, browsing the internet through wifi and 3G, using GPS navigation for at least 2 hours, making a few phone calls, having a live wallpaper active, and just messing around with random apps. I don't see any reason to complain about having to charge a phone once a day/night. I just charge it while sleeping and I'm good to go! For those that need a longer daytime charge, there are higher capacity batteries available, and some still fit flush with the Evo's casing! There's also the option to root (see below.)

Camera
I'm very satisfied with the picture quality of the camera! It's great, especially for someone who isn't a real photographer and who would prefer to not have to carry around both a camera and a phone. The only annoyance I have is with the video camera. Although it's satisfactory, and definitely better than most video cameras on phones, it could be a bit better and is clearly inferior to the iPhone 4's video camera. That being said, it's still great, especially for a phone. It just needs a slight improvement in audio quality.

Root, ROMs, Customization, etc
What I like most about my Evo, other than the huge screen, is it's customization options! The homebrew/developer community is excellent and is growing! Odds are, if there's something you want to change/install, it's available. It seriously feels like the options are limitless!

Although most people will be very happy with the many customization options are available out of the box (especially when compared to other smartphone OS's), others who want to take things a step farther have the option to root, opening up practically limitless customization options. In addition to creating more personalized interfaces, the developer community has drastically improved the performance of the Evo. They have managed to greatly improve the battery life and graphical performance, both of which are very noticeable. I was one of the few people who didn't think that 60fps vs 30fps would make that big of a difference, but after installing the custom kernel, I noticed the difference immediately, and I love it!

Conclusion
Overall, I love this phone! The minor faults (video capture quality, possibly battery life) are easily overshadowed by the advantages (huge screen, customization options, open app market, developer support.) I see myself keeping this phone through the full 2 years of contract I signed up for. The only phones I consider on-par with the Evo are the Droid X and possibly the upcoming Droid 2 and Samsung Galaxy phones.

Last phone was a Mogul, did everything I ever asked of it, but now having an interface this good makes that phone seem light years away! 4G is a massive improvement over 3G in download speed, when I can get 4G, which isn't all that often.

So far I have found apps or widgets to fix anything that I felt was a downside; keyboard, video playback, better music app, etc.... There are still a few radio stations I can't stream and would like to, but they utilize microsoft silverlight, don't see that compatibility coming around anytime soon.

All in all very satisfied, I'm hoping Froyo is as slick in the OTA as the rooted version for it, can't wait!

fine

No way in hell would I rely on a cell phone for trip pics or any pictures that are important to me
For me it worked great because of the form factor, responding to photo opps easily, and being able to instant upload pics and vids on the fly. The quality of images and vids is exceptional. Also, I took in excess of 1000 pics and vids on the trip and used less than 4 gb of SD memory. This was my real world experience using the EVO.

Best Phone I've ever had and I have touched many

As a Network Admin I get the fun of setting up every cell phone that come into the company to synch with email. In the last 2 months I have setup Blackberry's, Touch Pro 2, Droid and my EVO.
The Touch Pro2 is so slow and heavy I feel sorry for those people who got it.
Blackberry's are very nice and fast but the screen is way to small for anything other than email.
The Droid was what got my interest in the Android operating system. Nice phone, good display and fast.
My EVO........unbelieveable. This phone is everything that anyone could want.

Love it

I just got my EVO today. Had to drive 65 miles to pick it up and 65 miles back but it was well worth it. Beats my Palm Pre hands down. I have added an invisishield and a hard snap on case for protection. Now to figure out how this thing works..

I got the phone the first day it came out and the only main problem i have is my messages force closing and the landscape hitting the search button but other than that the phone is awesome. It is really fast and the videos are amazing. The only real big disadvantage with the phone is the battery life, but thats the only thing wrong with it from what i see

I had mine since launch. The longer I have it, the more I'm impressed. Loved my Pre. But, WOW! First time Android user. I'm thinking long time Droid-d-ac!

im loving it first android phone. had palm pre prior to this phone. just wish android had more of the gameloft games and ran better. my pre overclocked at 800mhz runs games better then my evo when its stock. but sense rooting and running Froyo over clocked to 1200mhz the evo runs the games just fine. its new the developers just need some time.

I came from the TP2.

Slow? Look at the processor. When it came out, nothing compared.

Productivity? Out of the box - yepper. You got Word, Excel and related programs. With the Evo, you just gotta spend money with DataViz for an application that has more than its share of issues.

Bluetooth implementation? The Evo bites here. Totally. The TP2, well other than the phone ringing at the headset and at the device, you never, ever hard anything from it if it was set to go to the headset. Never.

Email? It did ok with that. Exchange? Did ok with that.

Cost of productivity? Nothing. The Evo - well, at least the cost of DTG.

Another complaint - the search button. My right hand/palm, whatever, is constantly activating it. That is one button I can do totally without.
