EVO Shift 4G vs. Samsung Epic: isn't the Epic a better deal?

These two phones are quite similar in many ways, but it seems to me like the Epic is the better deal. What made you decide on the Shift over the Epic?

Evo Shift 4G
Price: $119
Screen: 3.6"
Storage: 2 GB internal

Samsung Epic
Price: $99
Screen: 4.0"
Storage: 16 GB internal

Based purely on specs, it seems like the Epic is a better deal at a (slightly) lower price.

What am I missing?

I would just note that those prices are for NEW customers, and not current Sprint customers upgrading.

Samsung materials vs HTC materials, Touchwiz vs Sense. Galaxy S phones seem great on paper but when you old them and if you stick to Touchwiz it can leave a lot to be desired.

I could have bought the Shift or Epic. I went with the Shift. Much better build quality and battery life. HTC supports their phones with software updates. I also like the smaller size of the Shift.

I have to agree. I love the Shift and only like my Epic. The battery life on the Epic if horendous. I'm talking the longest I could ever get the Epic to last even trying everything was 10 hours. I'm on my 46th hour on the Shift and at 7% left. I really do think the Shift is much faster as well. Dont get me wrong the Epic is no slouch but I really do think the Shift is way nicer and just an all around better phone.

How have you gone 46 hours? That's great! I can get a whole day, but I'm normally a pretty heavy user.

I really like the Samsung SAMOLED displays, but honestly, this display looks wonderful. It doesn't have the same viewing angles, but so far I haven't had any trouble viewing the phone straight on at all.

Another reason why I went HTC over Samsung is I feel HTC will update this to Gingerbread around the same time or before the Epic 4G even gets Froyo.

Hardware wise the epic blows the shift away. But with 2.2 the shift matches or beats the epic. When will the epic get 2.2? 2.3? My guess is never. They said september for 2.2 and kept pushing it back farther and farther until here we are mid january and no sign of an upgrade. Really gimps the most powerful hardware in a cell phone. Without seeing the shift at all, if givien the choice between the phones I would probably take the shift.

That was quick...haha.

Yeah I was sitting around and thinking at lunch about somethings wrong with the epic and the tradin value put it right at how much the the epic would have cost to fix. Pretty much a no brainer.

Those who still have the Epic can Install official version of Froyo DK28 manually.

I flashed Froyo on my Epic and it is running fine, no problems I didnt have to Root toFlash Froyo, although rooting allowed me to install custom ROMS and really utilize the Epics processing power.

I agree Samsungs delay in releasing OTA Froyo is a pita but the official version is available & can be installed with no problems.

Full Froyo version of TouchWiz is nice it has way more options and has a nice feel to it, combined with Beautiful Widgets or using Launcher Pro I love my Epic, no problems, i get a Full day use on 1 charge.

if the lack of having Froyo is the deciding factor between getting the Shift over the Epic, when the Epic hardware is by far better, than there really is no need to worry as Froyo is available on the Epic for those who take the time to read a little and in about 10-15 minutes you will Froyo on your Epic phone.

Wow I had no idea there was an official 2.2 for the epic. Did they reinstate tv out? How's the battery life and performance increase?

Still don't feel sad about my change, but upset at myself for not making enough time to do mobile research.

"Official" is subject to interpretation. ;) But that's a subject for a different forum.

If it doesnt come from sprint or samsung then its not official. :p

Now that Froyo is out for the Vibrant, I'd feel much more confident that the Epic is getting an upgrade. Does this change the calculus for anyone re: Epic vs. Shift?

No. I made my choice due to many circumstances. If it takes this long to get 2.2 on their devices how long will it take for the next release? They dropped the ball on both the moment and the epic as well as others. Oh and by them I blame both sprint and samsung.

Had the Epic, twice in fact. Amazing device, but its battery life is terrible, and Samsung has terrible support.

Thank you all for your wonderful insights. This thread has helped me make my final decision. I am heading to the store tomorrow to make my purchase!

Thanks!
