my two cents...
These two phones are quite similar in many ways, but it seems to me like the Epic is the better deal. What made you decide on the Shift over the Epic?
Evo Shift 4G
Price: $119
Screen: 3.6"
Storage: 2 GB internal
Samsung Epic
Price: $99
Screen: 4.0"
Storage: 16 GB internal
Based purely on specs, it seems like the Epic is a better deal at a (slightly) lower price.
What am I missing?
I have had 3 HTC phones (pocket pc, droid eris, and now the evo shift). HTC stands by their products and I had generally good customer service experiences with HTC. Their phones, imho, are generally good quality. Let's face it, no phone is perfect and all phones have some issue here and there.
I had a samsung moment. It wasn't a bad phone. My biggest issues with the Samsung Moment was
1) the lack of vibration feedback when I hit the home, menu and search touch buttons 2) the touch sensitivity was horrible. while the touch sensitivity on my htc pocket pc and droid eris was great.
3) the battery life on the samsung moment has the worst battery life of all the smartphones that I have owned (which is a fair amount and I have had a variety of them too). I know through research that android 2.1 os generally is the issue causing horrible battery life.
4) my impression of the build quality of my htc versus my samsung moment... I feel that my htc evo shift is built better then the samsung moment. my htc is heavier which, imho, leads me to say it's build quality is better. For me, lighter is not always better. When I pick up phones that are too light, I question the phone's ability to withstand normal wear and tear. This is just me. I also feel that the sliding mechanism of the htc evo shift feels like it will last a long time. It feels like is it sturdy.
Over all, my experience with the Samsung Moment (my first Samsung phone) was less then pleasing to me. If I am going to have a touch screen phone then I don't want to feel like I have to pound on the screen multiple times to select something. Other times the Samsung Moment's touch screen would work okay but I still had to apply more pressure then I usually do with touch screen devices. The samsung phone seemed like the attention to small details was lacking. I had vibration feedback for most touch selections yet none for the home, menu, and search touch buttons. Really?! Attention to detail...Samsung it's not that difficult. imho, htc does a good job with attention to details both small and large.
As it stands now, I will never buy a Samsung phone again unless I can play with an actually working model for at least a week. But really, I'm sticking to LG and HTC for my future phones at this time. Samsung still has a lot to prove for me to buy any of their mobile phones.
