Evo vs Epic

So, I suppose deciding between the two is quite literally "six of one, half-dozen of the other." I'm sure that if I get the EPIC I won't regret not having bought the EVO, and if I get the EVO, I won't regret not having bought the EPIC.

I really agree. They are both VERY good phones. They each have pluses over the other, but on balance they're very close. I agonized over which way to go, but eventually decided the overall package for the Evo felt better for me.

I still occasionally think "Man, it'd be nice to have the Epic's better *x* (Screen, processor, GPU, keyboard)", but then I also think about the things I love on the Evo (solid feel, sense, froyo today, kickstand, larger screen). People just need to decide what strengths are more important to them. No phone is perfect, but we're lucky to have two OUTSTANDING choices here on Sprint.

As someone new to Androids, I have a question: what exactly IS "froyo"? I hear all this talk about it but am not exactly sure what it is and what it does.

BTW, another question: how do I move icons to/from my home screen? And can I put a few more there? One somehow got there that I want to remove, while a few others I want to move from the apps screen to my home screen.

Oh, and before I forget: is there a way to STOP the screen from going into lock mode. I did adjust the setting to not do this, but whenever it comes out of sleep mode, I always have to "scroll down to unlock screen." Personally, I hate this.

Froyo is just an upgrade of Android, specifically version 2.2. It is also a delicious desert. It had a lot of performance upgrades, and there was a lot of buzz on what devices would be getting it.

Well, with Android 3.0 Gingerbread coming out very soon according to some reports, 2.2 might be moot.

2.2 is out, has been for a while. Gingerbread is rumored to be coming in the next couple of months and address the fragmentation issue.

Oh, I know 2.2 is out; obviously I'm running it on my EVO. A business report I read says 3.0 may be out in a few weeks. There's supposed to be a LOT of good stuff in it.

It may be announced in a few weeks, but it won't be on most devices for several months after that. Froyo was announced 5 months ago and some top end devices still don't have it.

The Evo is way faster on the 5 different benchmark tests that I tried. When Epic gets 2.2 that will change but by then Evo will be on 2.3. Epic feels cheap.

To me I don't think there is any comparison... the EVO is in a class by itself.

The EVO has a better camera & and that is a selling point for me. When I bought my EVO there was a sale on the Epic and it was cheaper than the EVO but i just love the feel of the EVO

The processor in the Epic is far and above better than the one in the EVO. That doesn't make the EVO slow, though, just that the galaxy phones are superior.

Also in side by side shots IMHO the galaxy phones have a little bit better consistency with pictures, but that's just my opinion. YMMV

Besides, do we really need to keep this topic going? If you need a physical keyboard get the EPIC, otherwise get the EVO.

I couldn't decide between the two until i held them in my hands. The Epic feels cheap and poorly made. I was also concerned that the keyboard would become loose over time. I am very happy with the Evo!!

I agree the Epic feels much more cheaply made to me, I also like the HTC interface much better. My wife has the Epic and I have the EVO I will stick with my EVO all day long over her epic.

I think the epic is a very nice phone. I just don't like slide out keyboards.

Part of the reason I chose the evo over the epic is because of the epic dock - can't change any of the apps. They said that it was supposed to change with froyo, but who knows when that's coming!!

Also, 4.3 vs 4.0 screen, thinner phone, and evo felt more solid. A friend has the epic and regrets not buying an evo :(

HTC evo still at the top of my list...this is the longest I ever had a phone without wanting and getting a new one...hooray I'm finally satisfied...ok maybe I could use a little more internal memory.

I almost bought an Epic, but I'd used the Palm Pre for too long and started having nightmares about phones with moving parts.

I was thinking the same thing. The evo has been out for over six months yet the hardware doesn't seem outdated . Usually six months in I am wanting a new phone. With the evo I am pretty sure that I will be satisfied with the hardware for a year. That would be a first. Not saying that I would, but I could probably be satisfied for 24 months with a major software upgrade.
