Excessive data use due to email

In the last month or so my S5 email has been killing my battery and drawing huge data. My emails are generally text emails with maybe one or two a day that need a document or photo downloaded. My emails are just personal emails through Bellsouth.

I've looked in the outbox for a 'stuck' email and I've looked for photos that could be getting downloaded continuously and there aren't any.

If you run the phone with background data turned off, it stops the excess battery drain but the phone is about useless in that mode.

FWIW The phone is showing constant data transfer whether on WifFi or 4G. I've had the phone for about 4 months and this used to not be an issue.

Any ideas?

Seems massive amount of data is used by your email. But it's only showing 9% in battery stat which is weird. Does com.android.systemui come from emails too or something else?

I couldn't tell you what its for and it seems relatively new on the usage chart. I've been googling it as well.

- something is definitely wrong, have you try to reset your mailbox ?
It's like if it was downloading each mail more than one time...

Wow! That's a lot of data. You could try to check if there's something wrong with the app or with your email account. First thing could be clearing the cache for the app, force stop (or even disable it) and open (enable) it again.

If the data usage persist after that you could try to manage your emails from a different app for a couple of days and see if the same problem is still there. That could be a sign of something wrong with your account.

I just cleared the email cache....6.5MG(!) and uninstalled then reinstalled the email app. Looks promising so far.

I use Blue Mail's email app, and find it to be very efficient. It does not use enough data to even show up in the stats.
And, it talks to the mail servers very well, when you delete an email in Blue Mail, it is gone on the server also.

Go into the app settings and set the Cache Limit to something reasonable.

Or, use an app that monitors the cache and will clear all cache storage regardless of where it is.

Clean Master is a popular app for that use.

Is anyone using Blue Mail with exchange account? I'm trying to figure that out but it seems to support only IMAP and POP.

Did you get the problem solved? I've got a similar problem, and sadly it looks like it's going to come with a £300 bill from my phone provider! Can't work out what caused it to happen.

I have a similar but different problem. My data usage went up massively by anything up to 30MB per day for no apparent reason. The data log showed it was all email but my recollection was that the volume of emails was no more than usual, so I turned off the WIFI and DAT, changed the settings on talk to delete everything off the server after 7 days, then waited 10 days. When I turned it back on, and out of WIFI range it loaded 6 emails which had no attachments and the data log showed 11.82MB. the next day I did the same and got 4 emails, again with no attachments and it showed 4.8MB. My email account from talktalk lags behind on data usage so I cant check it in real time but I do know that the data usage on the smartphone is more or less the same as recorded by talktalk over a period. Why is this happening?
