Anyone know what's going on here? Both mobile networking and wifi seem to be operational, but I don't know why the exclamation mark is there and why the mobile network icon is showing.

The wifi network I am connected to uses a manual proxy . . .

I can switch off mobile networking and wifi works and vice versa.

It means that there is problem with the wi-fi connection to the Google servers. I think it replaces the older convention of an orange icon meaning no connection to the Google servers.

No connection to Google servers can mean one of two things--a problem with the overall web connection, or a problem with the Google servers. The latter can explain how people can still connect to websites, but just not with Google sites or apps (assuming they don't also have mobile data on).

Ah! Our work proxy doesn't let me use things like WhatsApp and quite a few other services so that sounds like it is also not allowing Google syncing either. With the mobile data icon showing does that mean my G3 is intelligently routing Google traffic through the mobile network alongside wifi? Have only recently upgraded to Android v5 .... Would be very clever if this were the case!

I normally come across this when the WiFi network I'm trying to get on, needs me to sign in

I doubt that it would be able to connect via wi-fi and mobile data simultaneously. My guess is that the connection is going through mobile data. Try turning off mobile data, and see if you can connect using wi-fi at all.

Same issue with my Nexus 5 and I think it requires Proxy Authentication (Work place domain/username and password). I am not able to find out where to enter these creds.

I got this too... Later turned out to be a DNS resolving problem with my ISP. I switched my router's DNS addresses to Google's (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) and everything started working again. :D

Based on my experience, it could mean that the route to your DNS addresses/servers is inaccessible at the moment, so the problem is with your service provider and not your phone. You can trace route to verify. A remedy would be to switch to DHCP, if you're using static IP, or use the gateway address as your primary DNS. If the route opens later, you can switch back to your normal settings.

Same happening with me...someone help...

The problem is not with you phone, it is with the DNS server. That means you are properly connected to the WiFi connection but the Internet Service might be down. That is why you get that icon. I am from India and am very well accustomed to these kind of situations :p

No issues with your phone buddy. Call that ISP guy and make him get the line cleared for you.

Cheers

All you need to do is:

create a new user (in Settings:Users:Add user),
screen goes blank, click power switch to refresh, swipe to open, goes to welcome screen, press arrow in circle to set up, select your wifi from the list, press finished, then hold power switch to power down, power back up again, all fixed!

This is a simplified version of this solution (in post #38):

Had same problem, tried rebooting phone, rebooting modem, "forget" network. What worked is turning phone off, taking the simm card out for 2 seconds, put it back and turn phone on...Problem solved!!

hello, i have problem wid my motog. i upgraded it to lollipop. my wifi worked well for few days .now there is an exclamation mark (!) on my network icon. my fone is not able to search my own wifi. and could not connect to it. where as its able to search other wifi networks. i have tried with removing sim n reinseritn in the same slot and also in another slot. but still could not search my own wifi. and the ! mark is still der. what to do plz help any1?????

I've just installed a new ADSL modem and it has many more options than the old one. It's wired to the LAN, which includes a separate WAP - also new, so lots of room for confusion!

My Nexus 5 had the exclamation mark in the wifi symbol until I removed the Default Gateway setting in the DHCP server window of the modem, leaving it blank. Now all seems good. Next to try is the Sky+ box :)

It seems that networking is still a black art.

Believe it or not, I went to settings and under data usage my cellular data was turned off! Turned it on and no more exclamation point!!

TBH, I get something worse than that, like WiFi or the cell signal completely stop working, then comes back on.

I got the same issue on my Nexus 5 as well. I'm currently in China, Google, Facebook and Twitter are blocked. But it worked fine few weeks ago, I mean "No exclamation mark", and since I had lived here for like 3 years and now this annoying thing comes up. It got 2 exclamation marks on both Wi-Fi and data roaming right now, and one more ridiculous error is whenever I turn on my Wi-Fi, not connected to any Wi-Fi yet, it still shows up with that mark, after connection, still there. My Nexus 5 is not rooted. What really funny is my connections are fine, both Wi-Fi and data roaming, it loads really fast, I can download things with at least 1MB/s either the connection is. And yet, I admit that sometimes when I walk on the street, my data roaming shows up with LTE or H and no exclamation mark, after I walk away from that area, it shows up again. With Wi-Fi? I tried KFC's, restaurants, anywhere I could but still there.
Still, I hate that exclamation mark, searched and tried:
1. APN - Failed
2. Forgetting/Re-adding Wi-Fi - Failed
3. Turn on both Wi-Fi and Data Roaming - Failed
4. star#star#4636#star#star - Failed
5. Wipe cache partition - Failed
6. Update from 5.0 to 5.1 - Failed
7. Using New User - Failed
8. Reboot - Failed
9. Sim card out-in and different card - Failed
Anyone got any idea? I'm dying of looking at those marks helplessly!
