I use face unlock everyday, and I must say it's a go! Granted I'm completely Modded (Aokp M4/Franco's Kernel M2, 4.0.4 radio's) I never thought I would use it everyday, like I do.
Your thoughts

I use the pattern unlock. I find it hard to get the face unlock to work in meetings. Specifically anytime I'm looking down at the phone and there are bright lights above me. I could just hold it out in front but that gets noticed.

I don't know. I don't seem to have those problems even in dim light I can get my face to be detected. I guess I've fiddled enough to calibrate I d k?

The face unlock works flawless for me. Even in dim situations, I can give the phone a quick glance and unlock it.

You shouldn't be getting the dots around the face when you're unlocking the phone. That happens during the set up process. Once you set it up, you'll be surprised how easy it is to unlock your phone, and how hard it is for anyone else. It's so much quicker than pattern or number lock, and a little less obvious.

Watch the hats though.

It works but is very finicky in regards to how much light is behind me. I don't use it anymore.

It's a cool gimmick and it's works pretty well (when you take a million random lighting, glasses/no glasses, shaved/unshaved recognition pics). I used it for a while but switched back to pattern and now PIN. Either of those I can easily unlock my phone without even looking at it (driving, meetings, etc.) and I feel they offer more security.

I originally didn't use it, but once I tried it I have to say it's been working pretty well. I only took 2 or 3 face pictures to set it up (one indoor, one outdoor, etc.) and it recognizes me quickly and isn't a hassle to use. It's a little slower recognizing me when the lighting is dim, but it still works acceptably. Granted I don't think it's super secure, but it's just enough security for my personal situation. YMMV.

Have one of your pictures be a down facing one?

Its a cool little gimmick. but not as secure as a PIN or Pattern. With face unlock, someone can simply post up a picture that they have of you and unlock your phone that way...

But the technology is pretty awesome

Most of the time you just need to do a face recapture. I know that I was in a bright room and the white dots went perfectly around my face. Now with increase processor speed in everything it works flawless. I doubt you can even use a picture to open.

So if I lose my phone somewhere in publilc, I have to worry that the stranger who finds it will have a picture of me to unlock my phone?

I use pin unlock because of credit card info security, etc.

But face unlock works pretty darn good. it's just a little inconvenient when driving or when it's dark.

I stopped using it. It is a toy. It also takes too long, I can do my pattern unlock far quicker than the face recognition works.

Or your friends can get a hold of your phone and pretend to be you. And post pointless status updates

What are the chances that someone who steals your phone is going to have a picture of you at their disposal?

The only people who would have a picture of you would be people who know you, and if your friends would steal your phone and try to unlock it in this manner, you need some better friends.

Im just stating the obvious. How you secure your phone is your own business. Im just stating its not the safest route to go in protecting your device.

Im far less concerned for having a random stranger getting access of my phone, since the likelyhood of them having a pic of me is zero to none... Im more worried knowing someone i know can gain entry of my device. Weve all heard of crazy stories of significant others snooping on ppls emails and phone messages.. this wouldnt be any different.

As I said though...if this is the case...you need better friends/significant others.

I really like to use face on lock because it's convenient and futuristic. Not because it's going to make me any safer. My wife and I have insurance on our phones so if they get stolen by a stranger my lock and pin codes within the phone should kick in and render the phone useless to the thief. In these times most people know that your phone has gps on it... and other ways to find and track down your phone. I'm using a feature on the phone that makes it fun and unique otherwise I have no use for my front facing camera:)
