http://google.com/contacts - is great for people who are OCD about contacts and its a faster way to group and edit them. You can make a "Close Friends" Group here and then have it on your widget screen.
Before troubleshooting, always make a backup file first, just save a copy your your computers desktop or My Docs.
As far as HTC Sense Facebook, I have personally gone with the normal facebook app, and normal gmail downloaded app for my mail and facebook.
Also the side note, when you have hundreds of accounts to "link" click the 2nd lower android button to "Select All"
