Failure setting backup password

SOLVED. I found my notes taken when I set up my phone and had a backup password set there for backups -- which turns out to be the required "Desktop backup password."

We have two Nexus 5X phones with Google Fi. One of the phones has not yet received its May OTA. I checked with Support that they are still rolling out. However, I want to get the security updates on ASAP, and so I put minimal_adb_fastboot_v1.4_setup.exe on my Thinkpad Windows 10 x64 Pro PC, to update with the OTA that Google now provides, i.e., bullhead-ota-mtc19t-4ea6522b.zip which I also downloaded. I also checked that my drivers are the same as provided by the Google latest_usb_driver_windows download. I can see devices just fine under adb, listed under their serial numbers. I have rooted previous phones, but do not see any need to root these Nexus 5X phones (yet).

Before using adb to patch our phones (just one this month as the other has the OTA, but I'll be doing both regularly), I have two questions:

(1) I want to backup the phones first. When I start adb backup, on the phone I'm prompted for a desktop password. Since my account login password or phone login password did not work, I assume this has to be independently set via Settings -> Developer options -> Desktop backup password. To set this desktop password, I have to enter my current desktop password first. I have tried blank, account password, phone login password, but nothing works. As expected (not really), even though Google has just announced the OTA can be downloaded and manually installed using adb/sdk, Support will not give any help or info on any Developer options.

Is there any canned password set initially for these phones, e.g., like in routers, etc.?? I can't find any info on this.

I suppose I might try factory reset just to again try fresh blank, account password, phone login password, etc. However, this seems a hassle that should not be necessary.

(2) Assuming I cannot set the Desktop password because of (1), can the update be done without using this password? That is, will I prompted for this password in the process of doing the update?

Thanks.
