False Credential Denial

I dug up my old Samsung Galaxy Y brick but have completely forgotten the pattern. When I try to log in with my Google account instead it rejects my login, saying my credentials are invalid. I know this is not the case as I have never changed my credentials and I can log into Google+ with the exact same credentials as I am entering, including case-sensitivity. What is going on-is this a software fault or am I doing something wrong?

Welcome back! Do you have 2-step authentication turned on for your Google account? If so, turn it off temporarily, then try logging in again.

Hmm, not sure how best to proceed, short of doing a hardware button factory reset.

And how do you do that with just the power and home buttons? Also, I suppose there is no way to retrieve anything on the device now.

After a wipe, it seems to be accepting my credentials again. Was it because it was not connected to the internet or something?

Glad it's working again. Not sure why it wasn't accepting. May have been some issue with the firmware.
