Fancy flipping buttons

Can those fancy flipping buttons be turned off or at least dimmed substantially (and independently from the screen brightness?)

I would see that they would become quite distracting while watching a video or playing a game in the dark.

We can only hope in the future we can. Judging by what was leaked from Ice-Cream Sandwich they're removing dedicated Button location similar to what was done in Honeycomb, so by doing this you can assume in the future you will have more control over these settings with custom ROMs.
