Fascinate Froyo Speculation and Rumors

I hear ya. Its a good and bad thing with new tech advances every day, the manufacturers are finishing one phone and starting on its replacement the next day with little thought to support and the end user(customer) us.:-( Thats the way its gonna be for at least a while. We can only wait so long.

Google recently said they are gonna crack down and take charge to get all these fragmentation issues under control so I assume that means anything that runs the android OS. Hopefully that will be soon and was not just a idle threat to the carriers.
Until you can get OS updates directly from Google you will have to rely on the company selling it. Google wants control how their software is modified to be released on different devices, but it will not be able to mandate software support (OS upgrades) from companies selling them.

Today from samsung chat rep. Wouldnt give me any time frame. Froyo for the Mesmerize was about a week ago and that is almost the same phone diff carrier. So I would hope and think the official upgrade will be soon.

?Samsung is working closely with Verizon Wireless to complete the Android 2.2/Froyo platform upgrade for the Fascinate Smartphone as quickly as possible. Due to the complexity and unique functionality of the Fascinate, we are performing additional testing and are working to assure consumer satisfaction with the update. Samsung and Verizon Wireless appreciate the patience and understanding from consumers who decided to purchase the Fascinate. We look forward to sharing the benefits of the Android 2.2/Froyo OS through a simple and reliable upgrade in the near future. Samsung will continue to keep consumers advised of our progress.?

Basically this problem has Verizon bloatware/Bing written all over it...

I would tend to agree with you on this one. Thanks VZW/Bing. Boy that would be great if they gave us the option of removing bloatware without having to root. One can only fantasize, or root.

If they eliminate the fragmentation they will not need so many updates. They do have that control written in there contracts with carriers/manufactures to a certain extent but they chose not to enforce it. They are now realizing how bad it is getting with people still on 1.5 and they are working on like android 2.5 or later by now. Fragmentation sucks. So we are forced to root and deal with bugs and sometimes unstable OS.

If this is a Verizon problem, I would feel MUCH better about S'sung updating and supporting the 8.9'er.

Just to ease your mind. Verizon has had our Froyo update, tested and approved by Samsung already, since March 14.

That does sound promising... thanks.

I just looked at my response again and I guess I wasn't very specific. I was providing the info to ease your mind about possibly purchasing the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9. We are still waiting on Verizon to try and jam all their crudware and Bling into the Froyo that has been tested and ok'd by samsung with what they wanted to put in there. Just didn't want to confuse you.

Meh, Superfrankenclean 2.9.2 is kicka$$ for me anyways...

I doubt I will bother with Verizon's Froyo. Superfrankenclean 2.9.2 works great for me. What would I get by running the official release other then Bing?

I doubt I will ever run the Verizon official rom again. Maybe if I had to send it in for warranty but otherwise forget it.

Ditto here!!

Android 2.3 on other Galaxy S Phones?

So is it really true that other Galaxy S phones get Android 2.3? Or is it some stupid April fools joke?

I wonder if Verizon will surprise us with a Android 2.3 release (yea right) hahaha...

Google tightening control of Android, insisting licensees abide by 'non-fragmentation clauses'? -- Engadget
"Fragmentation" just means not everyone has the same OS. Without updates for older devices, how would they eliminate it? Also how many upgrades can be had before the hardware is too old? The G1 is not going to run Android 2.5 as well as the Galaxy S III, and to expect Google to try to mandate infinite updates is unreasonable.

Re-read my post. I said "not so many updates", updates will still be needed. And of course at some point older devices will no longer be supported because they still want you to keep getting a new device every year or two. We will just have to wait and see how this plays out. Hopefully in our favor.

I think it is the overseas models its coming to.

So in 2009 Verizon signed a 5-year long contract with Microsoft regarding Bing. I whole heartedly believe that there is some issue with 2.2 and the CDMA variants of the galaxy S phones, howver, I pretty firmly believe we may never see an OS update because of the aforementioned deal with Microsoft.

So my theory the holdup is having to re-bing 2.2 (why we cant just get a quicky update from Us Cellular) Or we are simply waiting for the contract to expire, i.e. never/extremely delayed getting an update.

Thanks Verizon!

I would honestly completely give up hope of ever receiving an update, or ever receiving any useful information regarding said update. The leaks is probably the best this phone will ever get, and I bet that person (if caught) lost their job.

Except for the fact that VZW and Samsung both sold accessories that require 2.2 for full functionality. There will be an update.

And that update will be Binged unless Verizon likes to give Microsoft back its money. And I believe that is at the surface at least the reason for the delay, some way for Verizon to offer Google + Bing within their contractual obligations.

Does anyone know what the published or unpublished end of life of the phone is anyway. It WAS back in March in the past.

Honestly, honestly, this is the only SANE reason for delay. The problem is Bing. I absolutely believe they are working on an Update, maybe even an update that works perfectly and is totally awesome. The real question is are we ever going to see it?

Last edit to really drive in the point,

2.2 is absolutely ready for this device. I can promise you that with 100% certainty, with some certainty if any CDMA Galaxy S sees 2.3, then 2.3 is probably ready for this device (if the Mesmerize sees it, absolutely ready). The big kicker is will we ever see it?

And to directly retort to your point. I think this was a tremendous oversight on somebodies(s) part, especially regarding the bing backlash.
