Fast battery drain (started today out of nowhere)

Re: Fast battery drain

Looks to be facebook family including facebook, messenger, and pages this morning. Fb had an update the other day and phone acted up right after install of it.

I don't have any Facebook apps on my phone

I started another thread about this last night around 2 am, my battery charge started dropping like a rock starting yesterday around 6 pm. I noticed it initially because charging the phone was taking hours not the hour or so it normally takes. Then I checked the CPU load using the CPU-Z app and noticed that all four cores of my CPU were constantly running at their highest speed and the massive power consumption was draining my battery and making it slow to charge. Looking at the list of apps and how much battery they've consumed only really shows foreground apps, it doesn't list all the stuff running in the background. Anyway, the high battery drain / high CPU load seems to have stopped this afternoon. I have no idea what it was but the event seems to be over and my phone is back to normal. I guess the Russians were finished downloading the contents of my phone. :)

I wouldn't either except for work. I just use pc or browser on phone for personal fb. But the phone browser limits functionality when not in office or home on pc.

While Facebook and Messenger are both battery hogs, this was something far more serious and it was running in the background. I doubt that Facebook and Messenger were the culprits. I uninstalled FB and FB Messenger and installed Metal Pro instead. I also uninstalled T-Mobile Digits. Since then I'm at 83% left after 4 hours. Too early to say, but for me that effort seemed to have helped.

I'm trying a new one called "Friendly", it's made by the same people that made Folio. But anyway, as expected my battery is lasting like crazy without facebook or messenger. With current usage, it looks like I can get 9.5 hours of SOT.. that seems a bit excessive.

Man this is crazy. Glad I'm not alone lol.
Wonder what it really was if some of you experienced it with no Facebook.

Have any of you ever noticed sometimes that random apps will stop working and ask you to force close? There problem is these are apps you never use.

Noticed the same problem this morning, I killed everything and restarted my phone, that sorta helped. I killed everything again and restarted my phone, everything has been fine since then. I'm still at 50% since about 9:30am today. Before that I was losing battery like crazy.

Re: Fast battery drain

I'm running FB messenger, but not the FB app (the mobile version via Chrome has pretty much the identical user experience), and having no battery related problems.

I 2nd that. The facebook mobile site looks and operates identical to the app, but does not have all the battery hogging features of the app.

I'm trying out an app called Swipe. It's pretty nice. It has a very similar feel to Facebook but doesn't have push notifications. You can choose a sync schedule. You can view and send messages from it as well instead of having two apps. I'm going to use it through tomorrow to see if I really like it. Not sure if I'm willing to give up push notifications but I think I will like the extra battery life.

What brightness do you set it at? That's crazy man! I usually have brightness at 60-70%. I've got 3 hours of SOT now and it's estimating I have another 2:46. I normally don't get that much. Facebook is a battery hog!

I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S5, but nevertheless this thread came up when searching for news about it. It seems to have been (or maybe it still is) related to Facebook on the server side and affecting the Android apps (can't find any official source for this, but it's a widespread rumour on the net right now at least).

Anyway, what I found was that after uninstalling Facebook and Messenger, and installing some older versions from APKMirror, the problem is totally gone for me - both Facebook and Messenger are back to using very little CPU and battery. Worth a try if you still have problems with them. If it was indeed a server problem at Facebook, it could just be a coincidence that they fixed something at the exact moment I installed these apps tho...

Wow lol that's insane. Earlier today I just stopped FB and messenger from running, charged the phone back up to 100% and just hit the 6 hour mark of SOT. Looks like all is good again, although I still received msgs and notifications from those 2 apps. Odd.

I use swipe from time to time.. It's my favorite. Just found friendly so I'm trying it out.

Happened to me yesterday. Checked the battery stats. Facebook and Facebook messenger drained 19% of the battery a peice. Never even had them opened. Deleted last night and today my battery is still at 90% 8 hours after I took it off the charger.. No more fb or fb messenger for me for awhile..

Definitely not going to reach that SOT time. I went to the movies and it was underground a few levels and I guess my phones radios were going out of wack the whole time. Haha
