fastboot vs. fastboot-windows?

In the [GUIDE] Nexus 4 -Unlock & Root, where did the commands fastboot-windows, fastboot-linux and fastboot-mac come from? I needed a more recent Android SDK because the adb executable was too old and not working for me when trying to transfer files off of my phone; the adb in the latest SDK fixed that problem. So, anyway, I see that the only command available with the SDK is fastboot, and it works fine for Windows, so I don't understand the difference between that and the fastboot-windows command, unless that is what was used in the older SDK.

Probably for people who don't have the sdk and only downloaded this: (https://dl.dropbox.com/u/47300967/nexus4-adb-fastboot.zip).

I know where it came from, but was wondering why special separate executables were needed for Linux, Windows and MAC. It really doesn't matter, as I have downloaded the SDK and it has a great update manager that keeps everything current, including the tools such as fastboot and adb as well as the Windows drivers.
