feeling better about N4

This photo was taken on a Nexus 4 with the stock camera app and no photoshopping or image editing.

Enough said.

Thanks for the input everyone ---

i'm not arguing that the N4 CAN'T produce good photos, i'm sure that it can, my issue is with regular autofocus. i don't have time to be fumbling around with exposure settings and everything else when im at a club or out hiking and want to snap a quick photo.

and like someone mentioned before, EVERYONE who reviewed it said the poorest part of the N4 experience is the camera. I should have to tweak 7 different settings every time just to get a decent photo...

outside, in good sunlight yes it's fine but you have to be extra steady and ect ect

i'm sorry but i have not read anywhere that it's on par with iphone5 or SG3

and i DO know how to take pictures.... that's how i know this one is crap lol

I love my Nexus, came from an Iphone 4 and in many ways I prefer this. But so far, the camera is pretty pants. The focus is terrible and the colours are just wrong. Indoor shots are the problem. Is there a good replacement app?

Again, it gets annoying when people defend something that is not defendable....!
Wow you take yourself way too serious cause it seems to you that your opinion is fact. Please inform me on what food and music I should like as well because I don't want to enjoy or like something that I just could not defend.

If your main complaint is the camera then by all means get something else.
It will sting though getting the One which already has an older version of Android. At least the S4 has the current version.
And both will definitely get KLP later than the N4.

I use the camera a lot & get more than acceptable pics from it. It does however require tweaking it & knowing how to set it up to take the best picture whereas the S3 doesn't but both take very comparable pictures.

What's more important to me though is the overall software of the phone.
I get about a half dozen phones per year but always go back to the most current Nexus for the software.

The Nexus 4 is an awesome Android phone for an amazing price. Just because its not 649.99 off contract doesn't mean its a cheap phone. Comparing the Nexus 4 to phones like the GS3 or G Note 2 which both sell for over $600 off contract then you'd see that the phones are very similar spec wise but Nexus 4 offers a better all round Android experience. Even the new phones coming to market are only offering a better display when compared to the Nexus 4 and very similar specs when compared. As far as the camera, its pretty decent. Not the best in the world but definitely not the worst.

The HTC One will never see KLP, the GS4 might but it will take forever to get and it won't be even close to what you get on the Nexus 4. I've tried the HTC One and its nice but I wouldn't trade or replace my Nexus for it. Everyone's different though.

the camera on the N4 is the worst camera since the iPhone 3G

i am just hoping that KLP is a major update that makes sticking with the nexus 4 worthwhile because it's the only advantage it has

Those are gross exaggerations. But other than that I'm sick of how much forum goers and tech bloggers have both allowed cameras to be such a defining feature on a smartphone. I remember in 2011 and earlier nobody gave a crap,, it was all about the smartphone features. I don't know why cameras became so elevated. Did we get a big influx of people unable to afford real cameras buying smartphones over the last year? Do you need to get this close to real camera tech just to snap instagram photos of your breakfast?

Really?? I came from an iPhone 5 (which ive taken 1,600pics with) and now I have a N4 (which ive taken 600 pics with) and i cant really tell any difference other then the N4 has photo editing software built in and the fact you can change from -2,-1,0,1,2 is EXTREMELY helpful. Im not really sure what youre basing your opinion on. Ive extensively used the Camera on the iphone 4, 4s, 5, S3 and N4 and i can say that the Camera is up to par. Also this phone is not cheap, its 199 on contract. Unlocked it is cheaper but that doesnt mean its "cheap".

Meh I still would say the iPhone 4S/ 5 camera is better then the N4.

Has anyone read anything about potential changes in the next version of android with respect to the camera experience. I know that the hardware aspect of the equation is limited, but I would like to see some development in this area. The camera experience and gallery display improvements found on the HTC One really have me thinking about jumping ship and keeping the Nexus 4 as a safety net in case Google releases anything really neat in the next version that will make me envious.

There was already a huge camera app redesign in 4.2. It's possible that they might do it again, but...

I agree. I LOVE my Nexus 4. Came from an iPhone4S, and tried the iPhone 5 for a few days/weeks. The one drawback, but it's huge to me, is the camera. It CAN take pretty pictures outdoors in good daylight, but as soon as I try to take a picture inside, like my son in our living room, the pictures are grainy and the focus is often not well placed, on top of taking a very long time to set itself.

The camera is the one feature that might make me switch to another flagship phone when my provider's contract is up at the end of the year. There is nothing I want out there right now, I'm hoping the Motorola X Phone is basically a Nexus with better camera.

Smartphones have become so big that most people don't want to carry one + a point and shoot. Plus why should you, iPhones (and probably the Lumia 920, didn't try it personally) replace most point and shoots easily, I think it's fair from Android users to expect the same thing.

The issue I have with phone cameras being such a big deal in recent trends is that a phone camera is mainly for what... sharing quick stuff on social media or whatever similar stuff. A night out with friends etc. Why do you need super high quality photos for that?

If your photo needs are for really important things like family vacations, your child's grad, professional use etc then you should most definitely be investing in a standalone camera.

I think people are really over hyping cameras on phones when you consider what the right tool for the job is. Either that or it's an issue of simply not wanting to dust the cobwebs off the wallet

The price difference between the Nexus 4 and any other comparable smart phone could see you buying a really good quality camera with the spare change. No smart phone camera gets close to a proper camera anyway so if pictures are such a big deal for anyone, buy a camera.

Are you by chance using a phone case and what type? clear/smoked TPU?

i find the camera on the N4 on par with my 4s but for a while I couldnt take a good pic... Then I took off my Cuzrlite smoked TPU case and put back my black Ringke and my pictures were consistently better. I can't say for sure but I think that the clear/smoke TPU around the camera area was messing up my lighting and made it difficult for the camera. Thats why I noticed on better quality cases they usually black out the border of the camer hole on their clear cases. All I know I went back to a black case and ok so not gonna mess with it.

If by chance you are using a clear case, take the case off and take some pics in different areas and test.

Absolutely not. It's terrible. It doesn't even have self timer... the auto focus is a mess and the photos are often washed out. Everything else on the device is a dream but the camera is... ugh. i think thats why they were able to sell it for so cheap.

Have you considered a camera app? I recently switched over to Camera Zoom FX (which has a self timer) and I have had a pretty good experience with it on my Nexus 4. There is a slight learning curve to maximize it's capabilities but nowhere near as much as it took for my micro four - thirds camera.
