Finally took the plunge and rooted

i have some questions, and I would really appreciate any feedback. First, my thunderbolt is running 2.3.4 stock, can I still root it? I was reading up on SU app and it seems to be not working with gingerbread (or at least major issues).

Secondly, it is my understanding that you have to downgrade your OS version before you can root it...I have downloaded the zip file, the md5 matches...but how do you know what's really inside that zip file (i'm talking abou the PG05IMG.zip) Where did this file come from and how can I be sure that someone didn't modify it so that my phone is covertly sending everything i'm typing back to the "mothership" :) i know it might sound a little paranoid but Im just curious about the origin of that file. Thanks.

I have contemplated rooting, but I really don't think I have a reason to. I guess I'm in the small minority of people who have never encountered a single problem with this phone. I have never had a random reboot, battery life is exceptional (much better than on BlackBerrys I've had), and the UI is very responsive. For me, I just don't think I can justify rooting and risking something going wrong when I'm completely happy with the current state of the phone.

I rooted this past Friday (Revolutionary) and then flashed BAMF 1.0.5. Still messing around with it but I like it. Sense 3.0 is pretty cool and I upped the minimum CPU speed just a tad. The only thing I miss from Gingerbread that BAMF doesn't have is the recently used app thing in the notification pulldown.

Question: everyone raves about improved battery life with rooted phones. Is that the case by default or did you all make manual adjustments? Is so, where?

Bamf does offer the recent apps thing as a mod you can flash.

My battery life is about the same on every rom I've tried whether I do a battery calibration or not. May be because I am a heavy user and often stream audio or video.

Many users report vastly improved battery time so don't judge by me.

battery life, speed and operation of phone, customizing, using different versions of sense...etc... it is definitely worth it...i was scared too but i downloaded the one click root and it worked like a charm...took me a lil while to figure out how to flash roms and radios but the members of androidcentral and teambamf are amazing and will help you every step of the way if you need it....currently using soab 1.03 and imo 5.0.3 for my kernel along with depinker....
Where can an idiot like myself find this one click root? I seriously need to do something different. No complaints about the phone but want to change just for the sake of change oh and the free tether is a nice option also.

I had the same blessing of a stock TBolt as well. No problems at all really. I just got tired of going through pages and pages of screenshots and seeing all these cool things people were doing with their phone, so I said what the hay?! Rooted my phone and my wife's, flashed Gingeritis 3D and am so much happier with this phone. It is a matter of preference to root, not necessity. The process of backing everything up gets to be tedious. That is really the only complaint I have. If you like your phone the way it is, leave it. For me, I just wanted to dabble!!

I agree it is crazy to root unless you just like to play around on your phone. I enjoy trying custom roms but considering only practical applications my custom roms don't really give me anything that stock can't. You get rid of bloatware but that never bothered me much. I just like flashing different roms and learning some of the ins and outs.

If you're a "set it and forget it" user I wouldn't recommend rooting. If you like to play around and try different things it can be fun.

http://www.revolutionary.io is the link. It is simple and takes about 15 mins. if you go slow!

I agree with the above posts...it the phone "just works" for you....leave it be....but, I think others would agree, the fun starts when you root. It is addicting. I have always been one of those guys that walked around the house with a philips screw driver and unscrewed light switches, tore apart motors etc....just to see how they work.

My view on computers and phones are..."I know it can do it, just need to figure out how"

I did it also but, I don't know how to flash. I guess I am just stupid or something..:(

I also rooted mine this week. I was stock but got tired of all the bugs with no data. Rooting was easy, and I am now running Liquid Smooth ROMS 3.1...wow, what an awesome ROM. Before the Thunderbolt I had the OG Droid, which I did not root while it was my daily phone, but now that I dont use it much, I have rooted it also to play with. Rooting the ThunderBolt was like getting a new phone!

During Christmas break when I have some free time and the updates have slowed down I'll consider joining the root community. I've feel right st home with the advanced users and software developers but I just fear that $100 deductible.

Willis....it is so easy to do. The rule of thumb is "If your phone turns on, your ok". I have rooted my phone only to not like it (at first) and had to go to Verizon to pay my bill...so I decided to UNROOT it before I asked them why I wasn't updating. Well, I am glad I did....I got a refurb phone out of it (my screen was cracked on my phone....got a new refurb one). But, I UNROOTED in a matter of minutes.

If your not comfortable out of the box.....watch videos, read "How To's".....watch more video's....and DO NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK questions. I think we all were where you are at at one time of another....once you get to the ROOTED side, you will be saying "what too so long"

....take your time, we'll wait!

Yes you can still root. The easiest way I know how is using http://www.revolutionary.io to do it. It took about 15 mins.

Well, because if you pulled the file and it did nasty things to your phone, that website would get a bad name and believe me, word would spread fast and there would be a "Don't download from them" alert.

If you pulled it from ANDROID POLICE....they are 100% legit. That is where I got my OTA the day before it was released in September.

The great thing about ROOTING is that it was reported and TRUE that HTC had a security issue with the latest OTA in which is has a file called "HTCLogger" which would actually sent information back to the mothership. But thanks to the DEV's, they removed that (So did HTC after it was brought to their attention) file from there ROM's and now we are disconnected from the mothership....but yet we still feed the pig for big red!

I'm in the same boat. If there isn't a need or desire, don't do it regardless of how easy the process may be or how much it is recommended here. To me, it is a very personal decision and not something to be taken lightly. :)

I'm in the same boat as the OP. I recently took the plunge after pondering the consequences if I bricked my device. But thanks to all of the great people and resources here on the forums, any issues I encountered was resolved quickly.

I like the fact that I have the ability to inistall any app I want, even ones that normally cannot be removed. I uninstalled all the Verizon bloatware. I'm looking forward to flashing bamf forever this weekend.

Will rooting solve the following?
1. Only default email account syncs
2. Calls use previous calls ringtone
Thanks for the info.
Im leaning towards BAMF 1.0.9 cause all the BAMF users seem so pumped!

I don't think rooting will solve those problems but tbolts vary so much I don't know for sure.
Bamf 1.0.9 is a very good rom.

Yes you can still root. The easiest way I know how is using [URL="[/URL] to do it. It took about 15 mins.

Ooh, really? I'm currently very interested in rooting, but I have the latest official OTA, and I remember everyone saying that you had to root before you installed that update, otherwise it'd be very difficult (or even impossible?) to root once the official update was installed. That Revolutionary thing looks neat, too, because it doesn't wipe your data; that's the one thing that's irked me from rooting, because I didn't want to have to start all over with getting my apps installed and set up again.
