First HTC One M9 Camera Samples

Anything is worth not buying into, yet another crappy HTC camera. It wont cost 800 so stop spreading false rumors. The only fact that we have on the HTC is that the camera blows. Get over it.

Another camera complaint from a reviewer. http://www.theverge.com/2015/3/1/8126431/htc-one-m9-hands-on-preview So what did HTC do this year if anything at all.

Regrettably, my initial impression of this camera is not a positive one. Image noise is present in most of my pictures, and low-light photography is basically a disaster. I was reminded of BlackBerry’s consistently inadequate cameras in the devices that preceded the Passport. Like them, the HTC One M9 lacks optical image stabilization, which the company justifies on account of physical space constraints. The image sensor also appears to be an odd size as the "regular" image ratio is 10:7, and there’s no 4:3 option to be found.

i never buy a phone based on its camera. if you want professional photos buy and use a real camera.

I'm so tired of small minded people making this comment.

I have a professional camera. Multiple. But I don't always have one on me. So, I want the best (or close to) I can get from my phone when I want to use it. This shouldn't be a hard concept to grasp.

You are mostly referring to DIFFRACTION which is generally seen when a small aperture is used. With f/2.2 being a large aperture I don't see your point.

The level at which diffraction becomes an issue is not just based on the aperture, but also based on the sensor size and pixel pitch in relation to said aperture.

Because on a sensor this small F2.2 is a small aperture. Look at the example in the link I gave you. As you move on toward smaller sensors the aperture will be different to get the same results. Reread the link, the info is there.

I am in no way trying to argue with you. But try to understand that while a good camera might be a huge requirement for you, it might not be so for others.

While it's not majorly important to me, I am still keeping it at the top of my list in buying requirements.

You'll get no argument from me! I don't expect everyone to have the same needs and desires for a phone as me. That's exactly why I said what I did earlier. People need to stop making decisions of what other people should want. The old "get a real camera" crap is many times a cop out used by people to justify why a certain phone should be good enough, by ignoring an obvious flaw.

Whether it's a lack of sd card, removable battery, mediocre camera quality, whatever the issue is: no one should be saying your product needs are irrelevant just because it doesn't matter for them.

Peter Chou was like "DSLR-like photo".... I was skeptical at best but then saw Verge's video... now I'm beyond disappointed...

Maybe they are waiting for snow? If they are they should come over to the Northeast. We've got plenty.

We should probably wait until the device actually goes into full-production. It's a pre-production unit, after all.

That is apparently the Sony IMX unit from the Z1, Z2 and Z3.

With a release in about 2 weeks, they better be in full production. By the way the big man was showing it off, I highly doubt that was beta version. Plus they had all the devices ready to view after the reveal.

Anyone who does research will be skeptical about buying the M9 and M8 owners have no reason to upgrade. I see terrible sales.

HTC isn't going to change the hardware between now and the 2 weeks it is hitting the stores/carriers. This, for all intents and purposes, is the final hardware. The software might receive a post-launch update but the hardware is done. There is no way that HTC can go back in and upgrade the camera without calling back the units they've already shipped and postponing launch another 2-3 months.

As for the camera, it's definitely meh. I was all set on getting the M9 until I looked at sample shots. I too have a nice (definitely not pro) camera, it's a compact mirrorless from Samsung. It takes shots that are definitely good enough for me, better than a point-and-shoot camera, and better than any smartphone. However, I am not allowed to take that camera into a concert, into a sporting event, and I'm not going to carry it with me everywhere. A high quality camera is as much of a feature, to me, as having an SD card (i.e. a requirement). HTC really dropped the ball with this. I was going to give the camera chance despite it lacking OIS.

The sample images I have come across on The Verge, Cnet, and various other sites leave a lot to be desired especially when compared to pictures taken with the Note 4 and iPhone 6 Plus (two of the best cameras in mainstream smartphones). I imagine the lack of OIS isn't helping HTC's case. Either way, the M9 is taking pictures that I don't want.

Samsung's announcements didn't thrill me either and I'm not going to get the either S6 because an SD card reader is one of my requirements. Even with HTC not announcing a phablet, I was planning on getting the M9. Now I have to play the waiting game even longer. I guess the 12 hour battery life (with a 7500 mAh battery) of my S5 will have to do for another month or two until LG announces something.

I mentioned "pre-production" because they may need to do some tweaks with the camera software, like you said. The hardware is done. No way they can change it now.

I just want a decent phone camera because I have a Sony a6000 mirrorless for my professional, serious shots. I just use my phone for simple point-and-shoot shots, but my M7 still gives me the purple tint that makes it useless. Thankfully, the G3 we got earlier has a much better camera.

The pictures look pretty bad, cant compare with the S6 samples. It appears that they used studio lighting on some of the shots and the pics are still bad. Dynamic range is bad, and they appear to be way over sharpened. Not impressed with low light shots either.

Pre production....no way. What you see is the real deal and its not good at all.

Its already been stated by Android central and many other sites that it's not the final software for the camera.
