First HTC One M9 Camera Samples

Pre production....no way. What you see is the real deal and its not good at all.

Pre-production models are final product versions that are not 100% ready for full-time production. Their hardware is 100% finished but they may require some more software optimization and bug squashing before full-production begins.

Like what AC stated, that's not the final camera software, so they're reserving their judgement until the phone releases later this month.

They have gremlins running around from adding a new chip and installing an even bigger camera. And they have been working on this phone for more than a year. Almost like this phone was rushed. But it's just like the M8...

I don't know. Maybe I don't get it. I'm looking at those photos and I see everything in the photos just fine. I guess I just don't know what makes these photos *so* bad.

I don't know.

I mentioned "pre-production" because they may need to do some tweaks with the camera software, like you said. The hardware is done. No way they can change it now.

Fair enough. I'm just not sure what HTC can do, software-wise, to improve the shots their camera takes. It looks more like a hardware limitation that is causing the relatively poor image quality. The software can only do so much and I don't know what HTC can do between now and then that would really improve things. It just looks like the Toshiba camera sucks.

Actually, it looks like HTC went with a camera that was thinner so they didn't have to make the phone thicker and/or have a protruding camera lens on the back of the M9. Personally, I would rather have a slightly protruding camera with a better sensor and OIS than something flush with the phone (or a slightly thicker phone). Samsung has been doing that for a while and Apple even did it with the iPhone 6 Plus.

The camera is really the only thing holding me back from the M9. Had they gone with a Sony camera that had OIS, I would be all over the M9. Instead, despite being higher in resolution, the multiple sample shots I've observed look worse than what my S5 currently produces.

They seem good to me and I'm certain they'll get better with software updates. Will the M9s camera be the best? Let's reserve judgement for release and see where we are. All cell phone manufactures tweak their cameras with updates. Even the iconic 41MP Nokia 808 had updates to improve it's camera back in it's day. I wonder what everyone is expecting? I think HTC knocked it out of the park with the M9.

Are you sober right now? If HTC knocked it out of the park at MWC then Samsung knocked it into another galaxy. The updates that HTC sent out to the M8 was just crap. Didn't change a single thing at all. In order for a camera to work, you need OIS, a great sensor, and great camera. I'm sorry, but you can't tweak a camera with software. A camera is made of hardware. My truck uses software, but that isn't going to do anything for my engine if its acting up.

I wouldn't put anything labeled "Toshiba" into a product at all. HTC needs HELP and should have another company help them with the camera next year. HTC is going to take a huge sales hit this year. We all know the M7 didn't sell well at all. Those are the people who will most likely upgrade to the M9. HTC is in trouble.

But it has EIS.....:D

Software can improve the quality of the pictures taken up to a specific point. There are limits of course what software can do. If the sensor is crap, then software won't do any miracles. If the sensor is ok though and the pictures are still crap, then it might be something that software can fix.

Apple is the best example. Their software optimizes the camera experience.

i never buy a phone based on its camera. if you want professional photos buy and use a real camera.

You're going from one end of the spectrum to the other. It's not about wanting "professional photos", it's about getting the best out of what you have conveniently available. It's far easier for me to capture spontaneous shots on my smartphone because it's the *one* device that's always with me. And if I'm taking the time to capture those shots, I'd prefer they not be crappy.

To each his own with regards to the use of his smartphone, but dismissing the draw to them for a great camera isn't the way to go.

Completely agree. If the camera is important to you don't buy this phone. It's camera is far inferior to iPhone and GS6/N4. And for all of you waiting on "updated firmware" I wouldn't hold your breath. From the picture samples so far it looks like hardware limitations. A software update can only do so much and even the most optimal software improvements wouldn't bring this camera to be on par with other flagships..

Other than being a BAMA fan I am going to disagree with you. The firmware from any picture to this point is not the final release firmware. There is no way to tell based on the very few photos available to say its hardware limitations.

You sound like an HTC PR representative. How do you know that a software update will be ready out of the box? I'm willing to bet that was in fact the software that will come on your phone. Why? How come HTC couldn't provide one or two phones actually running the software for people to review? Oh, they were waiting for people to tell them the camera sucks so they could come up with a lame excuse like they do every year for rushing or not paying attention to detail. Believe what you want.... After 3 iterations of a phone the camera should be perfect, if not ask for a company to come in and help you.

They're using a completely new sensor this time around so there will be a lot to learn and there will likely be improvements as time goes by

Very well said.

I have a Sony a6000 for my professional needs. But it's not always ideal to take a camera with you all the time. That's why I want a phone with a decent camera. It doesn't need a crazy-high MP count (which is pointless on a phone since you're cramming tons of pixels onto a small sensor, which degrades image quality at low-light as the pixel size is too small to receive any decent amount of light) nor DSLR-like optics. What I want is a good enough MP count, like 8-13MP and fast-enough AF, as well as a camera that takes decent pictures in any situation overall. I'm happy if it focuses quickly and takes decent shots.

Knocked it out of the park? That's the first time I have read that about the m9. After hours of reading over days and days. Can you elaborate more on how they knocked it out of the park?

The iphone 6 doesnt have OIS yet is considered the best point and shoot camera on a mobile device. whats your point?

"One of the best," but not "the best." Facepalm. If you are going to do something, be the best at it. No room for second place.

lol you're really going to argue this? Does it matter whether or not i said "one of the best" vs "the best"? Point is, you said OIS is necessary for a great camera yet the iphone 6 can still produce great photos without the need of OIS like other mobile phones do. I hate to say it, but i give credit where its due.
