First negative review I have seen... blames Pentile

the whole pentile thing is the main reason i might stick with my Thunderbolt. Hated it on original Incredible, hated it on the Fascinate, and chances are I will really hate it on a Bionic. Not to say the thunderbolt is good. There are visible pixels, the viewing angle is unstable and colors aren't calibrated right.

The jagged thingies on letters in text really bother me, a total deal breaker (and I looked at a droid x2 and a droid 3 today at the verizon store).

Manufacturers just dont get it - the screen is the main thing the user interacts with. It must be completely perfect, preferably with no visible pixels, any jaggedness, color banding and off-axis color shifts. iphone 4 is the closest thing to a perfect screen, but iOS is so terrible. I wish an Android manufacturer would pick up the panel they use and slap it on a modern Android based handset. I'd buy in a heartbeat.

Preemptive strike before the pentile argument starts again:

Some people love it, some hate it, some don't mind, others think its the worst thing in the world. Go play with it yourself. Make up your own mind. Don't believe everything you read. Have a nice day!

Add to that..."don't put any stock in reviews from Gizmodo."

My issue with Motorola's Pentile screens is that they lack color. To me they look extremely cool and muted. Clear and sharp yes but lackluster to look at. On the flipside, I LOVE MY GALAXY S FASCINATE. So maybe the problem isn't pentile per say but something specific to Motorola's screens or color settings.

I'm just curious, what exactly is a pentile screen, and what's different about it compared to, say, the screen on my Thunderbolt?

The interesting thing about this is that every other video/review I've seen has actually been praising this screen, and how this screen "looks better than the screens on the x2/atrix"....

In the "My Bionic thread" on these forums, bworley even showed the green screen test page that usually looks godawful on pentile screens, and it came out pretty well.... Granted I still will have to see it live, in person before I pull the trigger on the phone myself, but I wasn't even considering this phone until those videos because of my dislike of pentile.

I just find it very strange that with so many people praising this 3rd gen pentile screen or w/e that it is getting reviews that claim it is "worse than the atrix/dx2"

There are pixels that make up the resolution (ex: qHD resolution is 960x540 pixels), and there are sub-pixels that make up each pixel.

The subpixel structure is different with pentile screens. With traditional LCD screens, there is an RGB stripe matrix subpixel structure. With pentile, the fourth sub-pixel is white (RGBW). In a lot of cases, this increases light transmittance (brighter screen for outdoor viewing) and/or reduces backlight power (reduced power consumption).

The trade-off is that with certain (and very specific) color schemes, the fourth white subpixel can manifest itself with a jaggy-like pattern.

If you want to see the pentile screen in all of its (non)glory,
pick up a Bionic (or DX2, they are similar..)
change the wallpaper to the grassy Live Wallpaper....
you'll see obvious horizontal lines in the background, especially on the lighter colored areas.
Even the grass looks pixelated.

I dont know if its enough to stop me from buying this phone, but it definitely makes me stop and think about it...

Good grief, the screen bashing is getting annoying, You'd think they're working in Photoshop on this thing.

I am excited for tomorrow. I have a feeling that the screen must be different. I would hope so since one of the stock backgrounds is like a forest of Green bamboo. Well that is the best way to put it.

There's nothing wrong with Moto's screens. The problem actually lies with the SAMOLED screens; they're well known to be blown-out with poor color representation.

Regardless, the Bionic's screen is different than the others, and has already been praised for being more vibrant.

Its Gizmodo, unless its an Apple device, they hate it. They're a bunch of hack, Apple fanboys, posing as a tech site. I gave up on them a few months back

this is exactly how I feel. Their article quality has gone to crap, typo's everywhere, their comment scheme is beyond ******ed, and half the articles are just praising apple and talking about how they would give anything if Steve Jobs would just put his wee-wee in their stink hole...

I try to avoid fanboyism in general... but Apple fanboys are above and beyond the worst kind around. Unfortunately Gizmodo is just another one of the crowd now.

So when I saw that brief review a few days ago I took it with a grain of salt. Even though the other says they are an "android user and really wanted to like the phone" I have a hard time believing anyone on that website anymore when it comes to apple/android news

I've heard that but have never thought that about my screen. But as fas as this thread goes I tap out. I don't really want to argue about it. It is obvious that beauty is in the eye of the beholder LOL :D.

I can't wait to see the Bionic in person, that will be the only way to make any kind of fair criticism.

I think Cnet said "We have to admit that we didn't want to like the Motorola Droid Bionic. After so many months of waiting, we were prepared to be disappointed."

I think thats gonna be ppl's initial reaction that knew about this phone since Jan. So some ppl are gonna review it based off "it shoulda came out earlier" But...I just looked at Cnet's review again. They updated their review....after additional testing...it was given Editors Choice...lol

Yeah I saw that too, I trust Cnet though. I do not, on the other hand, trust Gizmodo for reviews. I might see an interesting product on the site, but I always skip the reviews and check it out somewhere else.

Also, the guys at Gizmodo said they did want to like the phone, but thought it was lack luster. It sounds like your saying vice versa?

I really like the screen and it's not like i will be zooming in to see the pixels. Some people exagarate things and look for the most mimimal things to complain about.

Just bought mine.

Utterly disappointed with the screen. I kind of thought i would be, but I was hoping to be surprised.

Oh well, I've got a while to check it out and decide.

Only good android phone reviews I've seen from Gizmodo are Samsung Galaxy s2 and Htc Sensation/Evo 3d If I can recall it right.

The pentile screen is better onn the bionic than the dx2. Also, gizmodo is stuck on the stupid gs2. Im sick of hearing about gs2 and to be honest samsung phones suck. I've used the phone for about 5 days and I personally love the pentile.

To be fair, everyone is gushing over the GS2, not just them. It is a powerhouse. There's no point denying it. Personally, having a Nexus S 4G after the EVO, I prefer Samsung phones to plastic HTC's. Maybe if HTC brought the unibody design to Sprint, I would feel different. Samsungs internals are hands down the best on the market every generation.
