First negative review I have seen... blames Pentile

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

Its funny, I have been busy setting up email and playing with the phone. I read the post here and it hit me, I totally forgot to look at the display. If i get right up and stare down the battery icon it does look a little grainy but it doesn't bother me a bit.

I dont get the "display looks lousy" comments.

I too forgot to look at the display. All i see is awesome!!

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

Same here, I just stared at the battery icon an for the first time saw the "issue" people talk about.
Not a big deal to me. I guess there are advantages to getting older...

The battery is where I noticed it first. Then I became more aware of it in more places. As a videophile it is upsetting.

I love the phone and the display. To my eyes, the colors are true and beautiful and I love how bright this thing is.

Now don't get me wrong. It is a gorgeous display. The only issue is the graininess. I doubt it could be fixed in software but if it could I would give this phone 9.99999/10 (10/10 is impossible in my books). As it stands now, I give it a solid 9.5-9.75/10

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

So the moral of this story is not to stare at the battery icon. This phone is amazing!

What are you using to read? Between tapatalk and kindle, I've seen absolutely no issues like you describe.

Yeah I saw that too, I trust Cnet though.

I don't really trust CNet anymore. I used to about 6-7 years ago when I used that site for all of my reviews. Don't get me wrong, I trust them about 10x more than I would trust Gizmodo, but my problem with CNet is about 3-5 years ago they removed their numerical (10-scale) rating system for a 5 "star" rating system. Now, almost every single phone/product released gets 3.5-4 stars. There is typically no exception unless it's an Apple product or a Pioneer TV.

They are still pretty objective and use good methodology in testing and reviewing, but they seem far too mainstream and try not to offend any of their product manufacturers by rating anything too low or a competing product too high, and they definitely don't go as in-depth as Anandtech on computer and mobile-tech reviews.

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

Can screen issues be fixed with an Ota update?

No. It's the PenTile sub-pixel matrix that causes this effect.

I've never seen something inspire so much love and hate in smartphone screens as PenTile. It's amazing really. It makes you wonder if the benefits of PenTile are really worth it in the long run. When the screen can be the sole factor that stops someone from buying your device, you have a problem.

Just keep in mind that with PenTile you guys are getting a couple of things. Improved battery life on most screen use, and very nice white backgrounds. The white backgrounds on qHD Pentile screens kill SAMOLED Plus in my opinion, and maybe even better, at certain brightness levels, than the iPhone's retina display.

I personally don't mind the PenTile screens. They don't bother me at all. But man some people really hate them.

I personally love the screen. Even on the lowest brightness I could still see the screen outside. That's much more than could be said for my Thunderbolt's screen. Even on the highest brightness with the Thunderbolt I struggled to see.

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

I have no problems with the screen either.
But friend thinks that the people who do like PenTile screens must have cataracts.

To each their own.

I just went to check the Bionic out in person, and I just can't do it. I can see literally every single pixel on the display - and unlike the pentile matrix display Samsung used on AMOLED and Super AMOLED, it carries on through to pictures and video. Side by side with my original Droid and it's resolution puts it to shame. Colors, saturation, and brightness are much better on the Bionic, but resolution is just as, if not more, important to me. I can't in good mind pick this phone up for myself, nor any other using this sub-pixel technology. Odd that I can see so well up close - enough for me to walk up to the Bionic (as well as the Fascinate when it was released) and just cringe - yet I cannot make out the gigantic E on an eye chart without glasses...

I suppose my only hopes, that are at least on the near (possible) horizon, are the Nexus/Droid Prime or HTC Vigor. This original Droid is starting to feel really old, however...

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

Yeah I was turned off by the display myself. I went to the Verizon kiosk at BJ's this morning to buy the phone but after playing with it for around 45 minutes I decided not to get it. The screen looks pretty bad when using the web. At the default zoom level it looks the worse, it does get better when zoomed in though. The home screen looked fine though. I was very disappointed. The phone was extremely fast though, even with the crappy Verizon Demo app running in the background. The phone also felt good in the hand and was pretty light as well.

45 minutes on the display phone! What were you doing that whole time, watching an episode of True Blood? That's the most I'll use my phone in a full day (minus time talking on the phone).

I was reading alot of reviews, and people say the display is great. I guess I'll see it when my phone arrives.

My issue is the the colors cant be true... When you play angry birds, the color is off. Cant describe it. But one thing I know for sure is the birds beaks should be yellow. Not dookie brown. More yellow brownish looking really. Also i noticed that in moonchaser (free game on market) the text should be yellow but it's way off and hard to read. The ghosting isn't as bad as I feared it would be. But the colors... I can't get over it. I am ultra mega depressed right now. Of course this is compared to a Droid X but still it has issues with the colors.

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

I've had issues with Pentile Matrix sub-pixel setup since Samsung started the trend with their AMOLED and Super AMOLED displays. I can see every single pixel on the display... Every single one.

However... After reading so many comments from those that didn't notice the pixels when the Fascinate was released, I went to check it out with a group. I even made a second trip when family was in town to get the opinion of my mother and grandmother. What I found was that most people don't notice it or it doesn't bother them enough to care. After looking for the pixels and comparing pentile with non-pentile, it was about 1/2 and 1/2. If I hadn't pointed it out, more than 50% thought it looked great.

I was truly dumbfounded. I also found people were not bound by age - even with the same genes. My mother, at 58, couldn't see a single pixel - no matter how hard she tried. Meanwhile, my grandmother at 78 could pick them out right away. Both wear glasses and are near sighted, as I am. I cannot make out the gigantic E on an eye chart, but pentile displays are horrid to me.

So, it essentially comes down to how well you see up close. In some ways I wish it didn't bother me - I've wanted this phone for quite a while.

For those of you loving every minute of it... Enjoy. :)

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

Laser Eye Surgery here and the screen doesn't bother me a bit/takes alot to see the pixilation. Moral of the story is everyone sees everything different so what looks just great to me may not for someone else.

Not sure what you were seeing, but I just loaded up angry birds on my x2 and colors were spot on.

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

Why is Verizon saying the screen is a Super Amoled Plus???? Is It?

You can really see all 500,000 pixels? Thats quite a talent.

And just an FYI, pentile or not, the resolution on the bionic lays waste to that of the OG droid. They aren't even comparable.

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

I noticed for literally five minutes and then poof, haven't since except when reading about it on here.

Re: Love the Phone...Hate the Display

I noticed the pixilization right away and I always defended Moto and the pentile screens because the X, X2 and D3 never bothered me one bit. The colors and brightness are great though.

It looks the same as interference on a monitor when you use a bad cable. It may be an optical illusion but it looks like they're moving. They look like old CRT raster scanning lines.
