Fix the Tethering Bug resulting from the 2.3 Gingerbread update

Re: Fix the Tethering Bug resulting from the 2.3 Gingerbread upda

Right, Samsung did say you would lose everything when you updated.

Now I couldn't deal with that tethering bug, my OCD about things being correct won't let me sleep and have that error on my phone lol

Re: Fix the Tethering Bug resulting from the 2.3 Gingerbread upda

Thanks Kelly for the information in previous post. I am thinking the same as skulldroid67 right now. I am holding off on the reset and I am checking into rooting the phone so I can freeze the tethering application. I understand that rooting carries some risks of it's own though. What I am looking into is if I can root it, freeze the tethering app, then un-root it. If it leaves the tethering app frozen when I un-root (which I suspect it should), then I may go this route since I shouldn't lose anything this way.

I HATE doing resets, but I was remembering the other day, back when I had a T-Mobile Dash (last reset I had to do) it was even worse. You would back up your contacts to your SIM, but the SIM made each number for a contact, an individual contact. Not so fun to redo the phone then. Having the Droid is 100 times better after a reset, but it is still work.

I'm still too scared to root my phone, so the reset was good for me lol

I just did the reset...what a pain..this is more of a hassle than gaining Root! Ok so now my apps on the market say Installed.. and I can't reinstall any of them wtf?

oh well that's odd...

Did you also get the newest Market after reset or do you still have the old one?

Also, you haven't moved apps to your SD card have you?

Re: Fix the Tethering Bug resulting from the 2.3 Gingerbread upda

Also try dialing (but don't hit send) *#*#2432546#*#* and see if that will do anything. That generally helps to push updates to you, might help "clear" things up and won't hurt for you to try.

I'm waiting for the Market to self update...the help FAQs say it will auto update on its own..I see all my apps while viewing Android Market on my laptop..and they all say installed.. also I see my devices including the cappy but they are "greyed" out.

I didn't move any apps to the SD card...at least not that I know of..does that occur as part of a factory reset? I was really hoping to avoid having to reset but try as I might was unable to eliminate that tethering bug.. and like you Kelly that was messing with my OCD too lol

Hold up...coming back to life now...what a dork I am :-!

Re: Fix the Tethering Bug resulting from the 2.3 Gingerbread upda

hahaha

No, the apps won't move, you have to move them and not all apps can be moved to the SD card. The Market will self update, but mine was taking FOREVER. That code I gave you above might help the Market push out the update to you also, works for some, doesn't work for some.

I've got a link to go to on your phone to download a file if it doesn't update soon and you are tired of waiting.

I haven't seen the bug one time since I reset.

Something I just noticed though, the timer, which I don't use often, now turns off if you open an app while it is going. It didn't do that before GB. :(

Re: Fix the Tethering Bug resulting from the 2.3 Gingerbread upda

yea, everything seems to be fine and I've been putting the device through the paces checking to make sure it's "bug" free...it appears that it is! Sorry my so called fix didn't last...lets move on to other fun things now lol. :)

Well I for one am glad you tried that last fix. People like you trying things is the only way we find out how to fix issues that AT&T/Samsung do not really worry about.

Re: Fix the Tethering Bug resulting from the 2.3 Gingerbread upda

Would someone detail the "factory reset" procedure and what will it reset to ver 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 if it has been updated? Also, what all should be saved before doing the reset to maintain contact, documents, data, etc.?

I would think one should put what they can transfer to the external SD card and then remove the SD card before the reset.

Go to settings, then privacy and choose "factory data reset" and follow the instructions.

You do not need to remove the SD Card, the reset doesn't touch the card. To help you decide what to save, remember how your phone was the day you bought it? That is how it will be again, except, it does NOT remove the operating system updates. If you did the GB update from Samsung, that is what you will have. Whatever version you have right now, you will still have after a factory reset.

Or turn your phone off, hold down volume up, down, and power til the "globe" screen, release buttons, then follow the on-screen directions. Back everything up and pull your SD card out just on case.

Everything that should be done prior to doing a reset is detailed in the Official FAQ available on Samsung's web site. As many might recall the instructions WARN that performing the update will erase everything; contacts, apps, messages, etc. So I guess doing a reset after the fact isn't so bad.

All things considered, my reset only took about thirty minutes to reconfigure. I just got tired of trying to find a work around the tethering bug.

Re: Fix the Tethering Bug resulting from the 2.3 Gingerbread upda

Hi All,

I'm new to the gingerbread. I've had my Samsung Captivate for 10 months and have just done the update to GB. I don't care so much for the new keyboard. And I have little fingers. I have done the tethering bug fix twice. It only comes up 3 or 4 times when it does happen but very very annoying. Is there anything else besides a factory reset? I don't shut off my phone. Except when ATT signals not working and nothing comes through to my phone (texts, emails, etc). My phone froze the other day with the GB. Any info on this also. Thanks to all the info I have read.

As mentioned....root the device and freeze tethering manager with Titanium BU. Done.
