Flashing a Rom vs Flashing a backup

I am new to Rooting and flashing Roms but I have successfully loaded 2 different Roms. I configured the first Rom, loaded all my apps then completed a nandroid backup via Clockwork. I also did the same thing with the second Rom I installed. I have a pretty good understand of what I am doing now but I am unsure about the proceedure/capability for restoring a backup.

Now that I have 2 different Roms that I have configured is it possible to toggle between them? I saw the option to wipe the cache partition which made me think that it might be possible to run 2 roms, each on their seperate partition, and boot to the Rom of my choice? I have never read about anyone doing this so Im guessing thats not possible.

Im guessing i have to flash the nandroid backup each time i wanted to "toggle" between these configured Rom backup. What would be the best practice when restoring a nandroid backup? Same as flashing Rom?

Is it best to wipe all (data/factory reset, dalvik, and cache partition?) then flash the backup or is all that not nessessary when restoring a backup?

Thanks for the help

I'm pretty sure your backups include cache and data so restoring them will overwrite existing cache and data.

ROMs on the other hand do not so you should generally always wipe data/cache when flashing a ROM.

On the other hand, you could just experiment. It's kind of hard to hurt anything when you have clockwork installed and your phone backed up.

You don't need to wipe cache, dalvik, or data to restore a back up. You should wipe those if you are flashing a new rom, however.
I don't know of any way to toggle between two roms without restoring your nand, probably bc the backup is a complete copy of your entire system, and you can see how long it takes to backup or restore one, so i would guess it's not really possible to do it the way you're inquiring about.

Ok, So flashing a new Rom is not equal to restoring a backup....... thats the part i didn't get, I was thinking loading a Rom would have the same process as restoring a backup.

Its a shame there wasn't a way to partition the internal memory for a dual boot :-). I was hoping.

Thanks for the help.
