Flat/Raised keyboard (pics)

People wanted pictures. I provided pictures. I really dont care either way, im happy with my droid as many people seem to be whether they have flat/raised keys. All the advertising shows flat keys. Im guessing its because 95% of the Droids have flat keys, so you are right that is the only official build til we hear something else.

yea im not putting down this notion at all. just curious as you are. My keys are definitely flatter than your pics. As I've used the keyboard more and more, it's growing on me anyways so I'm not too worried

So the newest stock of droids have a raised keyboard?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? I just got my droid on the 3rd of Dec and mine is a flat keyboard. Hmmm i think i need to stop into a VZW tomorrow to get an answer and or a swap out because this is bs.. i mean its not the biggest deal but the raised keyboard would be nice!

no this has not been determined yet. we compared the supposed build dates that we found on the phone underneith the battery, and the dates did not match up (i.e. a phone with the most recent date in our comparisons had flat keyboard, and the raised one had an earlier build date).

That said, id love to hear if verizon has any real info on this, so let us know if you do talk to them.

erica honestly they wont know that there is even a difference. And all the inventory will be flat keys. Just so happens that 5% of droid owners(that is a guess) have noticed raised keyboard but its too rare right now to even know what the deal is.

yeah i just talked to my friend who works at Verizon and she was like.. yeah i know nothing about it.. but i dont think thats right for there to be two different types.

we dont even know if thats the case.... the raised key ones could technically be classified as defective units because all the advertising and everything they show on the phone shows the droid with flat keys... Just an observation. Doesnt necessarily mean there is two builds.

Something to consider:
Last night I used the physical keyboard and both on-screen keyboards to type out the following:

The quick gray fox jumped over the lazy brown dog.

Typing that sentence took 35 seconds with the physical keyboard. It took 35 seconds to type with the on screen keyboard in the horizontal mode, and 35 seconds with the on screen keyboard in the vertical position.

I have a "flat" keyboard, 43/09 build date. From my extensive research, I'm willing to bet that it would probably take around 35 seconds to type "The quick gray fox jumped over the lazy brown dog" with the raised keyboard.

Just a thought...

All I know is that I have been using the physical keyboard more than anything and my space bar seems to be a little lower than the rest now probably because of use. I woud love to have some bubbles or something raised.

I still have my blackberry curve and I can type 10 times faster on that little keyboard... why couldn't they have copied it?

My guess as to why they went with the flat keyboard is to save space. They didn't want the droid to be thicker than it already is. However, if they really did start making bubbled keys with no thickness problems or problems in relation to sliding, they should have spent more time on that idea before they started production.

Also, my keys look very flat but if I firmly(not hard enough to press any keys) slide my finger over the row of keys, you can definitely feel it is bubbled. It's odd but its true and my droid was made 44/09.

By the way just to clear things up, does 44/09 stand for 4/04/09?

thanks

Really? dude, you're slow. :D

I don't buy this whole mysterious "two keyboards" thing. If anything the "raised" ones have a manufacturing error of some kind that creats the raised effect.

I bet the keyboards are actually the same. If I hold my phone at the angle the flat keyboard was shot at, it looks flat, but if I change the angle slightly so it matches the second photo, I notice the slight bump in each key more because the light catches the curve.

I'd say it's all the angles and perception based on past keyboards and individual experiences... but for the record, 42/09, bumped keys (I think), loose battery cover (easily tightened though), decent reception (76 db) and slider with click, no gap.

I just got a 45/09...flat keys, tighter fitting battery cover, good reception (70-85 db) and no slider gap/click.

nice details, so in the spirit of full disclosure...45/09, flat keys, tight batt cover, great reception but WITH slider gap/click

I feel like i'm sharing A/S/L...

I got my Droid replaced last week and the keypad is the raised one. I thought I was imagining it at first, but I did notice it was slightly different.

Almost posted it at the time, but I figured some would say it was BS.

Post a pic! Is it easier to type on than the old one?
