Flexible screen, useful or gimick

What do people think of the rumored flexible screen version? It looks cool but is it really useful? Seems like the curved screen around the side would be more vulnerable to scratching. I'm not sure how useful being able to see notifications along the side is. Seems like it would be more applicable to the Galaxy Gear watch than the phone itself.

I imagined the curve going from top to bottom, not sideways. Interesting. Well, with Gorilla Glass 4 (ahem) it may still be okay.

That's a shot of the YOUM concept phone from CES back in January. The talk has been more of a curve top to bottom like the Galaxy Nexus had. The curve on the GN is trivial and not worth the extra work imho.

The rumours have been more along the lines of a Note Active where the flexible screen would help it survive impacts, drops and that sort of thing. Not to have a curvy or bendable phone (yet).

somehow i want to get excited by the thought but....yawn.....its just not waking me up. i'm pretty careful with my phones and don't tend to have scratches let alone cracks in my screen, so really, until they do something amazing with the "flexible" screen i'm at the who cares spot.....

Seems like it would be more compelling for a watch, I think just a novelty for the phone itself. I wonder if it will be as hard as Gorilla glass? I'm more concerned with scratch resistance than breakage as I keep my phone in a case and don't like screen protectors because they decrease the clarity and don't like the resistance to sliding my finger across the glass.
